Electronic Cruise Control

Several years ago I installed and Audiovox electronic cruise control unit on the FJR that I had at that time. It worked great. The K1200GT that I just traded for the GS had cruise from the factory. I liked that too.

The GS has a Wunderlich throttle lock that the previous owner installed, but I prefer a dynamic electronic unit that adjusts for inclines, headwinds, etc.

I'm looking at a Rostra unit. All electronic, no vacuum supply needed. At about $250, it's a lot cheaper than the MC Cruise unit.

So my question is, has anyone installed a similar device? Short of that, can anyone tell me where to look for the VSS wire and how many pulses per second it generates?

I'm taking a trip out west this summer and would love to have the unit installed and operating by then.

I haven't seen anyone install such a unit. The MC Cruise works well but it's $pendy.

Sounds awesome! Do you have a link to the model you're referring to?

Why yes, I do. Here's a link to Rostra's site: http://www.rostra.com/main/rostra-support.html

I have purchased the universal unit, model #250-1223 with the dash mounted controller (extra).

There are several on ebay, Amazon has them, and I saw them on Summit Racing's site.

First one who figures this thing out has to share with the rest!

There are a number of threads about this in the Oilhead Asylum. IIRC, the guys that used the Rostra unit had to use the magnets on the wheel method of getting VSS.

Search is your friend...

I did a search the parallel forum, but not in the oilhead forum. I'll take a look. I'd prefer to use a VSS signal if at all possible. That not being an available option, I'll use magnets.

Found reference to VSS on K12s found at the GPS plug:

Long shot, but perhaps our aux plug over the battery carries a signal?

Cool! You might be on to something there!

I seem to remember that my GT had 3 wires left bundled up under the battery cover. 2 of them were switched power for an accessory (GPS). Always wondered what the third wire was for. Maybe the GS has that wire too.

Hi, I'm the owner of the referenced site. :) A friend of mine put the same cruise control on his K1200S and made a how-to about it. See here: http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/do...200S_Final.pdf

Of course most of that will be useless, but I think it contains some tips and hints you may find useful when you do your cruise on your bike.

Wow! First post. From Netherlands. Different site. Not contacted. You have some amazing snooping software at work!

Do you know If the Vss rate 6 pulses per minute as I saw referenced for the rt-p elsewhere?

Hope this info crosses over. It would be nice if this works. Thanks

Thanks afterburn. I got your email. Thanks for the speedy reply! I'll dig into it a little later. Have to install a 685 kit on the KLR this weekend, but your info has been a great help!

I contacted him via his web site. Glad that he posted here as well. Hopefully we'll be on on our way to a successful cruise installation soon!

I have no idea what the pulse rate is. For the power commander all I care about is having usable signal I can calibrate the PCV against.

Thanks anyway, BuilderBob appears to have the ball under control.

Well, the Rostra CC kit arrived today, so I guess that will be my next project. Have to finish buttoning up the KLR first. I'm wrapping up the big-bore install on that pig.
