heated grip hot spots? why?

I had a hot spot on my throttle side last year, burns your hand where it happens. Had gloves on, didn't realize it was getting soo hot and rode with it on like that till it stopped working. bought a new heat element, installed and all is well. this year it's the other side. I have a hot spot right now. What is causing this? is it age? is it because my bike falls and when I am putting a lot of pressure on the grip to lift it up? any ideas? It melts a hole in the rubber on my scott grips it gets so hot.
