That section had some nice two-track stuff on it and regular forest roads. The dead end up toward Iron mountain was because of dead fall blocking the road that we couldn't get around (not for lack of trying). There is a warming hut up there that would make a nice place to camp. Also, there is a nice lookout on Lookout Butte that was unlocked, and worth checking out-- I think they rent it out . We passed several promising 4 wheeler trails going off Newsome creek earlier that I would like to get back to check out when not loaded with gear. I'm guessing those trails connect and run around the ridge above Newsome creek, and would be really fun.
We usually take 443 in and out of EC, but that and O'hara creek road were closed due to washouts last year (closed but not impassable, with some very threatening FS signage); so we decided to check out something new, and it was really enjoyable. I think you could spend a long day in Newsome creek finding some fun stuff, as a layover day in EC. Oh, and did I mention that Idaho kicks ass? Cheers, matt |

Thanks for the info. I ran the Magruder then the Lolo Motorway one weekend last September and was gong to try and find a dirt connector from Elk City to connect up to the Lolo, but got sidetracked with a front tire going flat so favored the slab up to Kamiah. I'll be a checkikng it out later this summer when things open ujp. Thanks for the gpx.

You probably already know about this, but FWIW, the Benchmark Maps Road and Rec Atlas series are great for showing most of the dirt roads available with gates and POI's and whatnot. Unlike the Delorme Gazeteer which has too many roads that are gated, no longer in service, abandoned, closed, or just long gone.
Anyway, cheers to riding season! |
