Mobius 9 Prelim route

NOTE: ...revised 3/30/2012 with helpful feedback, and new intel. This is our FINAL DRAFT, loaded onto our 60/76csx's and what we will be attempting to ride. Same general route, but now fully scouted on Google Earth to make sure something exists on the ground that might be a road or trail. I'm using the Garmin 24K topo maps (ID-North Central, OR+CA+NV-West, and UT-Southwest), except where noted, then I used the Topo 2008 maps. Routing is set to "Follow Road" "Shortest Distance", all "Avoid" options are unchecked. While on Topo2008, routing is direct, point-to-point from buoy to buoy (the icons -- not actual buoys, it's the desert, ya'know)

Because of the variation in how different computers & GPS units auto-route, I've converted the routes to tracks, and uploaded them as well. We HAVE NOT ridden this route... they are computer-generated tracks only, please don't presume this route is passable -- there may be locked gates, private property, washed out roads, or snowed-in passes. I will post our actually ridden tracks when we return.

What day are you "planning" to cross into NV?

Rock- wondering when you will be in the area- thinking I may ride up there, somewhere with a few of my peeps if available. Maybe we can link up, maybe we can't. Either way, we wish you luck and nothing but the best hospitality in the great state of Nevada.
Cheers,
Matt

Matt,
looks to be about halfway -- May 17-20th. To hook up with us, best advice is to follow us on spot, check in with the NOAA snow cover overlay's, and intercept along our route. PM me your email for our cell / email contact info, and we'll try to initiate communication when we're on the grid around Crater Lake / Klamath Falls.

.gmap file

Using IMGfromGPX I've created an M9 overlay map image of our route (a continuous track converted from the routes as spec'ed in Basecamp). If anyone's interested in intercepting us, this may be helpful, since the converted tracks used to generate this image each contain ~5000 points at full resolution. The same tracks when pared down to <500 points to fit on a 60/76 series gps will leave out a fair amount of detail.

The .gmap file gets loaded onto your computer (double clicking in Mac, using GMTK for PC) and then compiled along with the usual maps you load onto your GPS.

When selected to "show" on the gps, the M9 map will appear as a green line visible along with whatever other map you also have showing (Topo, CNNA, etc.).

You can still load the waypoints and routes provided in the .gpx files above, but this overlay will be rock solid insurance that you'll have our exact route, in a way that auto-routes may not be once recalculated on different units, and it'll have more detail following the trail than multiple filtered tracks and as a bonus doesn't tie up any track memory, in fact, it's loaded on the sd card, and is tiny, only 234kb.

If you'd like the .gmap file, PM me your email and I'll send it-- unfortunately, only .gpx files can be attached here.

Gerlach: It's cool to ride across the dry lake bed. Head towards Trego ditch for a soak. The water is scalding where it comes out clear and cools as it heads away from the RR tracks. That area though is closed during the BM gathering and for a few weeks after. Also Fly Geyser is in that general area. You have to view it though a zoom lens as the property is posted.

Coming to this post kind of late, But the "dry lake bed " mentioned above can be a real wet mess this time of year
In spots the ground can change from power robbing soft to ice rink slippery in a few hundred feet

Thanks for the intel. We'll likely take a pass on riding across Black rock lake bed-- it's not clear to me where we'd be able to cross the railroad tracks on the other side. We'll be at Bunnyville salt flats later on in the trip, so I imagine we'll get our flat-out speed jag topped off there.
