R1100GS what are these plugs under the rear seat?

I have the aluminum rear rack off the bike to repair the cracks that seem to be common with the R11XXGS bikes and noticed two plugs under the rear seat. I can't find the source in my wiring diagram.

So, does anyone know what they're use for?

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping that I could tap into one of these plugs to run some rear facing LED's.

Anyway, I welded up the cracks in the rear rack. What a PITA. I cleaned up the cracks and ground a small bevel to lay in the welding bead. Since the rack is cast aluminum, I had to heat up the entire casting before I attempted to weld it. Then I carefully welded the cracks. After the welds were complete, I place the rack into a pail of sand to cool naturally at a slow pace. Needless to say, the powder coating was very discolored after the heat processes.

I ordered a set of these braces http://cariboucases.com/store/?name=...=i&item=000307 and will install them tomorrow when I re-install the rack.

I installed the brackets today. Beautifully made parts, package includes all the fasteners required to do the job and very clear installation instructions. A top notch product for a good price.


I think the reason the cracks developed is because the Hepco Becker top case that I use is cantilevered off the back of the rack. When it's loaded and I'm bouncing down a dirt road, the case tends to flip like the end of a fishing pole. Probably a bad idea to weigh down the case anyway since the weight is up high.

Hope this helps with others who might have a cracked rear rack.

This happens frequently enough that every 1100 and 1150 ought to know about it. The aluminum isn't sturdy enough to hold that sort of mass especially when it is being worked up and down on a washboard dirt road.

I have an extra rear luggage carrier next to the spare FD for the same reason.

Somewhere in here are several folks who have repaired the rear rack. I seem to remember that they didn't weld since that still leaves teh same issue as before. I think that some of them took the rack off and turned it upside down, put some heavy duty adhesive type compound, something like bondo or jb weld etc and then put a piece of barstock in there for rigidity and then added some more to help hold it in place.

Maybe someone will refresh our memory.
