Åland - Turku (Åbo)

I've heard that instead of taking the ferry Stockholm - Turku I can instead take Kapellskär - Åland.
Then from there, I can ride and take normal ferries to get to the mainland.

Is this true?
And, if so, how long time does it take, and what does it cost?

(We'll depart from Pisa, then visit friends in Turku, Rovaniemi, Muonio, Tromsø, (pop up to Nordkapp, maybe), Bodø, Trondheim, Kristiansund, Bergen, and finally in Farsund. Then back by means of Hirtshals to Pisa)

It's true. You can go from Kapelskär strait to Naantali (Nådendal) 12km from Turku or Kapelskär - Mariehamn.

From Åland you can take small connection boats trough archipelago to mainland near Turku.
From Åland to Turku that will take one day and it's bit more expensive than normal ferry because there has been to much traffic on summer time.

From what I understand:

• Ride from Mariehamn to Hummelvik.
• Take Norra Linjen to Torsholma on Brandø (sorry, don't have the correct umlaut on this keyboard)
• Ride to Åva
• Ferry from Åva to Kustavi
• Ride accross the island
• Take a ferry not named on Google Maps (Road 192)
• Then on to Turku.

Is this correct?
Better (cheaper / faster/ nicer) alternatives?

I´ve taken the "norra linjen" couple of times.

First time boat(overnight on the boat) from Stockholm to Mariehamn
Second time via Grisslehamn to Eckerö-Mariehamn.

From Åland there are then four ferrys.
1. Cableferry to Vårdö, free, about 10 minutes



2. Hummelvik to Brändö, Cost about 15 euro, almost 3 hours
Makes some stops on isles.




3. Brändö to Osnäs, if you take the ferry wrong time at the day, it costs up to about 40 euro. If you overnight on the Brändö isle, you show your overnightreceipt and the ferry is free. about 45 minutes



4. Cableferry Vartsalaferry, free, about 10 minutes



About the costs: you can take the "norra or södra linjen" and you can also cross the isles. As you already noticed above, the costs depends very much on overnight on the isles or not.

Capa Superiore della Famiglia has, more or less, decided that instead of Pisa - Tallin - Turku we'll do Pisa - Malmø - Stockholm - Turku.
So it seems we'll be doing the islands.

There are not much riding on the isles between Åland and Turku, Vårdö remebering is about 30 kms, at least between the ferrys.
Åland I remember has about 900 kms roads, Think most of them are gravel and I´ve never seen this 900 kms of road. Maybe explanation is in....I like to much to drink beer?!?

I'v done the southern and north routes several times (on motorbike,bike,car) and can recommend them if you want to see something more of the beautiful archepelago of Åland.I can see from your postings that you are a friend of good food (and coffee).Why not spend a day on some island and enjoy the local food?

I prefer to take the ferry from Kapellskär to Eckerö to get to the main island of Åland.It's a 2 hours trip.Then you have 25km to Mariehamn if you want to visit the adminstrative center of Åland.

Please be aware the the smaller ferrys can be quite crowded in the summer.The best way is to book in advance but normally an (extra) motorbike can allways be squeezed in.You can also call the crew of the ferryboat and check if there is space for a additional bike.Phonenumbers can be found in the timetables.

We depart from Pisa tomorrow (Tuesday).
