I also like the better view/less nose pieces. One of the things I hated with my Duc stock (better now with the short windshield) was catching the windshield in my line of site while off-road. The other day I had a tree knock my headlight loose on the SE, I think the Adventure would have been more of a mess in that situation. (lots of trees, falling and standing, had to weave through and climb over a bunch) Oh and the high fender (not that you can't add that)....

That being siad, I would love to have both or even a AdvR and a 500 EXC.

In the end buy the one that gets the blood pumping....I love the SE so much that I bought 2 of them....but now that I have a 690E...I don't need what the SE offers for offroad....

how'd y find the 690e off road?
i've got a 400exc at the mo for laneing but think a 690 will do the job just as well and cope with the road miles better.
i'm also considering the 990 adv but would have to choose where i go more carefully.

I have a '10 530exc for the rough stuff and a '11 Adv 990R for everything else.

With the 530 i also signed up for the KTM Enduro Trophy Cup here in Italy and its awesome fun, very well organized and they bring you to beautiful places, with the starts often times in the main piazza's of towns. The Adv on the other hand does everything else. Brings me literally everywhere else. I love this machine every time i hop on...

These two for me have been the perfect kool-aid orange mix.

Even though the hooligan in me keeps drooling over SEs.... I have an Adventure and a '12 500 XCW which is a great combination.
The silly thing is that the 500 costs more than an SE

That actually was what made my final decision! The singles seem to hold their resale well and new, between tax and dealership fees, the SE was the best deal for me for a big dual sport.

I run the SE with a safari tank. I came over from a GS, so I was really spoiled with road comfort. I upgraded the seat (XPC), still not GS worthy, but I can slab as long as I need to. The motor is also a little more buzzy, but that is prob going to be on both bikes. I raced in an Enduro one weekend, then rode the bike to the Catskills a week later, then road another dualsport a couple weeks later. I just change the tires, the rear spocket, and put a wind screen and the bike will do everything you need it to. If I was going to Alaska, I would go back to the GS, everything else, the SE is the tits. Plus it is easier to work on.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll end up going with the ADV. I have an 06 525 for the serious off road (man I LOVE that bike). I also have a KLR 650 and a Honda 919. I'm thinking of selling those and getting an ADV 990 R, best of both worlds. From what it sounds like, the ADV will run circles around the KLR, so it should fit right at home in my line up.

I think I lust for the 30lb weight cut in the SE from my 950ADV... Seen some on craigslist recently in far off lands... been very tempted to sell mine and fly out to ride one home. Course that is sort of against my prior thoughts of getting a smaller bike. 30lbs is smaller though, right?

Here is one more opinion for what it is worth. I like the analogy of using the proper tool for a given job. Like others on this post, I am lucky enuf to have a 530 and a 990R. I have gotten the 990 into plenty of places that I probably should not have so, it is more dirt capable than most would expect. Having said that, while I did get the 990 in and out of those places, I also know it would have been easier and faster on the 530. So, for stuff more technical I use the 530. Point is, having both of these bikes, they make the perfect combo.

I have spent plenty of time on friends Super Enduros. Based on this if I could have only one bike I would look hard at the Super Enduro or even a 690. Or, if your not going to get into too technical off road, then the 990 is great.

That's funny, I just did 40,000 miles on my SE in Latin America and prefer the SE for comfort. And I had plenty of room for all my gear.

Hi Misery Donde estas? I´ve only got 50K kms on my SE in Latin America but the other day I rode the bike at 100mph out to the motocross track and then did a few laps. I rode it down here fully loaded with Storm cases. Lined up with any other set up motorcycles down here, my bike is the most bad ass (except for Misery´s). It is the only newer bike where the price is actually going up to buy one. What a shame it is that there is no incentive in the market to build a bike like this.

I'm a dirt bike guy by nature. I still ride a two stroke as I feel the thumpers are a bit heavy for my taste. That being said I bought an adventure for the road with the thought of doing some graded fire roads. Well I couldn't have been more wrong. With some suspension work(SPS) I absolutely love riding my ADV offroad. Serious offroad. I'm sure the SE is a bit better but I have zero regrets. I've ridden my ADV on everything from Norcal single track to wide open Baja. Several 500-700 mile days with 200+ miles of dirt. Amazing. An ADV would compliment you thumper like nobody's business.

Thanks for solidifying my decision! What you just described is pretty much exactly how I'd be riding.
