Aren't you gapping those rings a bit loose? .0020 for the top ring?? I thought it was .0012.

And how in the hell does a pistons compression ratio dictate which ring set it gets??

Well for your 2nd question.........i have no idea,,,,it seems the 10.5 gets a 2mm oil rig spacer.......and the 11.25 gets a 4mm spacer......CW thinks it`s due to them being to cheap to manufacture a new mold...and they just move the pin hole for different compression ratios ..and this moving the pin down makes it so they have to go with thinner oil ring spacing ..not sure on it though..

Alrighty then............


JE specs the ring gap on the top ring on their 2618 alloy pistons as:


BORE X .0045

So 4.015 x 0.0045 = 0.018 and that`s their minumum gap....


The second ring specs at :


Bore x 0.050


So 4.015 x 0.0050 = 0.020


These are minumum gaps.....i sety my last 101mm at these,,it was fine i thought...


CW said i should go 20 thou on the top ring and 22 thou on the second ring due to it being an air cooled engine which can run hot...and butt the ring gap together....since it`s only .002 over minmum spec....sounded fair to me

Just looked at the OE service manual.

Top ring .008/.0016

Second ring .014/.022

So.........CW said to prime the crank,,i thought this was a great idea.....gets some oil into it well before start up...so i took a squirt bottle full of oil...poured it into the crank end.........




Then hit it with some air to get it spraying out the rod thrust washers..







Then i refilled the crank and left it full.i expect most of the oil will not stay in there,,but prelubing anything is a great idea...






So then i had to carry this lump of crap up the stairs and across the yard to the garage,,good thing the garage is close,,,these are not fun to carry...



Then i took and went through 2 rolls of masking tape and cardboard to prevent scatching the crap out of the new paint work...





I even add more cardboard,,made no difference...still scratched the f`in paint..........f`in powdercoat..hate the shit....chips to easy...and when you tighten bolts it splinters off........won`t do that again.........or maybe i will,,,,it`s easier,i`m lazy..........screwit...


So i got the heavy lump of crap in..no fun there,,never is






Then,,since i had beer and it was fairly nice out...i put Marks cooler back on..




And the passenger front peg,bracket,skidplate and rear brake lever........and bled the rear brakes for fun...

Yup.good for their OE rings maybe..ring gap depends on cylinder expansion and mostly the material the rings are made of,,different rings expand at different rates.....but to be safe i go with the piston manufacturers specs everytime,,,,,,CW confirms this too.....

BTW... The lump goes in MUCH easier with the oil feed hoses OFF...

Yeah.i know........but they are a pain in the arse to get in after i find...the inner bolt is a real prick to get at,,even with flex sockets....i left them off last time i put it in,,it was a little easier,but i was swearing a blue streak trying to get that 8mm bolt in

Oh Man, that shitz easy. 1/4' drive wobble socket with a 6" extension. And to keep the bolt stuck to the socket just put a dab of wheel bearing grease in it.

Really enjoying this thread and made a few observations:

• I agree with the weight of the motor. I recently had mine out and found it to be a real nut-buster just dragging it across the garage floor.
• I liked the tensioner trick. I really struggled going the the traditional route.
• The powder coating looks great. Go the extra mile and try to be equally as anal about the other bits. For example use this to justify buying the IMS oversize pegs. Pledge on the rubber/plastic bits and a little satin black rattle can might help bridge the gap.
• Kenda tires? DOT? What tires/size?
• Can't wait to see the "running motor" video.
• Canned beer?

I believe it also depends on the piston manufacturing process, cast vs. machined.

Thanks Rob.......i need the encouragement.........with the shit i got at work with employees thinking they don`t need to work i`m finding it hard to be motivated when i get home,,instead of drinking my face off



I painted anything black that looked crappy,,except the pegs,,,turned out good,,,,,,IMS pegs..........well i got ebay 13 dollar cheapies on here,,seem to work well


The tires are 5.10 -18 rear........they work well in wet rocks,,river crossings and fairly decent in gravel........in mud they are freekin scary as hell........so in the spring/fall i run either an MT21 rear or D606......on the front i like the MT21 all rear round.......

I`ll see if i can get the wife to show a test run up the street ,,but i have no camcorder so it`s gonna be from a digicam at best.unless i get off my arse and get a GoPro

Shouldn`t really make much difference if the piston is cast/forged really,,,the piston only really carries the rings,,they float in the piston exerting their own pressure.........piston expansion should not affect ring clearance at all.if the piston expansion actually forced the rings out or in that would be a problem....the only real thing to effect ring gap is heat on the actual ring and expansion of the cylinder wall........

But.......a higher comp piston will usually run hotter than a lower comp one,,,and that affects the gap for sure........
