Started out great, thought I'd follow the road book Guys but then they Got turned around. We finally made it to the lake bed when I realized I had a rear flat. Not just any flat, but a sidewall shredding kind and I only had 50 miles to go! I rode that slippery pig out, more on that later. we Changed the wheel out Rick took the bile and made some good time before switching it off to Luke . Bike made it to bay of la! No more info yet, I get the bike back on stage two tommorrow so me and rick are in guerrero negro.

Sadly Decafe texted me he was broke down. Any word on him?

Scotty reporting from Bay of La.
Attention! Tim Morton sets all time speed record for Baja, 69.66 mph!
Alexander Smith (Malcolms son) finished the section after needing to r&r the top end of his vintage Husky.
The two KTMS 950s still lead*

*on the road physically at least... looks like #108 took a massive time penalty hit of 114 minutes on the second transport section
for arriving waaaaaay early at the start control for the SS2.
Unless it's a timing glitch... he waaaaay up the back for start of DAY TWO.

NICE WORK Tim!!!

Talk about badass! Tim is racing solo. Then when the race is over, he is going to ride his bike all the way home.

Oh, and he rode from his house to just west of Borrego on Friday and then to Mike's that night.

Saturday, he rode to the start line in Mexicali.

Go BBM!!

Thumb find results, rules etc. here; at NORRA.com

http://norra.com/index.php

Oh... if anybody wondering about the math... you get penalized 1 minute (per minute late to control over the max time allowed) on the road (transport) stages
but penalized 2 minutes (per minute early to control) on the road sections (ie. exceeding the minimum set time allowed for the road stage - ie "speeding").

Seem's Aaron forgot to turn off "race mode" after he passed the timing marker at end of SS1... ???

Each Special Stage will be scored individually. Liaisons (transits) will not be scored but have target times and maximum allowable time windows to complete. Penalties will be imposed for early arrival (i.e.: speeding). Failure to meet the maximum transit time will also result in road penalties (i.e.: over time-limit assessments). Ample time is allowed to complete each Liaison section. There is no benefit to speeding and laying up.

Time windows are computed as follows:

- For example from the 2011 Mexican 1000: Liaison 1 (Laguna Salada – Diablo Dry Lake) is 59.7 miles, the posted speed limit is 80KM/Hr and there was a military checkpoint along the route. Now, calculate Transit Time Window as follows: 59.7miles*1.6KM/Mile = 95.52KM, driven at 80KM/Hr max speed, the minimum allowable transit will take: 95.52Km / 80Km/Hr = 1.19 Hrs. 1.19Hrs*60min/Hr = 71.64 Min. We add an additional 30 minutes to this liaison to allow for traffic conditions, and other variables. Therefore, the acceptable arrival window will be a minimum of 71.64 minutes and a maximum of 101.64 minutes in this example.

**All Liaison Transit times will be provided on the Vehicle Time Slip**

They are getting penalties mostly on the transfer sections. There is a time window that you are supposed to arrive at the end of the transfer section (and end of each Special), based on the time you started that section. Those who arrived too soon were speeding on the highway. Those who arrived too late took some sort of LONG stop. The time window on the transfers is based on the highway speed limit, plus a little slack for making a gas stop or some other moderate stop. I'm sure many didn't pay any thought to their highway times. Maybe tomorrow they'll be aware of it! The time spent on the transfers is not included in the overall results, except the penalties you get there.

Tim Morton is out

Mex1k - end of Day 1 - The combined results of today's 3 special tests end up like so...
TIM Morton (thats me) with 10+ minute lead over Octavio Valle (Dakar trim 450x) then KTm 950 dude Mike (that bike hauls ass by the way) about another 5 minutes back.
Andy Grider had bike problems. The KTM team of Vanscourt/Bolton/Jones had an issue too.
It was strange but as I'm pinned down all those fast road...s I'm thinkin' to myself the bike should be a little faster, almost like I was pulling an anchor behind me. I just attributed it to the lack of knobs on the tire, the change of dirt, and that I was getting bored going so fast for so long.
I finish the 3rd special test, all good, I knew I had 'em covered.
Then I'm cruising down the Hwy.1 transfer stage and the mighty XR wasn't feeling so mighty.
It started to bog, sputter, clack clack clack, done.
That's all she wrote Folks!
Crank is gone. :(
My race is over, DNF.
I sent my bike & gear away and now have just my backpack and some cash. Vagabond style.
But don't stop reading Race Solo because I'm still here and now I'll be properly "hydrating" and might bring you some good entertainment!
Now I'm off to the Griders place and gonna have Andy buy me a Pacifico (I've done VERY well so far at that this afternoon!).

Boy,,, I'd be really surprised that Aaron made that mistake. He knows well enough how the timing works.

I'm rooting for the #5 motorcycle. Two riders way out of their element and 3500 miles from home. Not a bad first day after shredding a tire and forced to replace it 2nd stage. The tiddler hit 96mph on the GPS!

First time either of them tried to ride a roadbook or tracks was first stage...

Long ways to go, though.

interesting to note Boatman (seems you are correct), but on the latest (revised) results lists on NORRA.com, Aarons result (Moto #108) has been amended - no penalty of 114 minutes (early) and he now sitting in pos. 3 overall Moto.

But with #151 reporting a DNF at end of Day One (busted crank), it seems the 950SE boys are pos. 1 & 2 for the start tomorrow...
