Bike Market
I would like to purchase a bike in South Africa and was curious where the best market is for used bikes. I have not bought a plane ticket yet and would rather fly directly to the a city to buy a bike. Cape Town, Joburg, Durban...?
I'm after the South African plates/registration to tour around without the need for a carnet.

Gumtree.co.za :)
There are Geo-targetted sections to the website, so you can decide from where you want to buy the bike.

Yes, I agree. Check this link
http://www.gumtree.co.za/f-Cars-Vehi...QQgalleryZtrue That will direct you straight to the motorcycle listings in South Africa, just make sure to check the top right hand corner of the page to select the city/province. You can make use of the search bar to put in the model name. I would suggest that you try and browse every brand and model of bikes you are interested in, to see what is available, before you decide to buy one. Gumtree's got everything.... Have fun buying your steed. Cheers

Just saw this thread after I made another thread... But was wondering...
I will be traveling to JOH tomm for work but then after from the 16th at night to the night of the 20th I am free... Original idea was to rent a bike but the problem is I don't have a motorcycle license (off road races in the US and don't need one in Egypt)... Current plan is to rent a vehicle (can be 4x4 if needed) and explore the surrounding areas... Would be great to get some tips on where to go, what to see, where to stay! I will be returning to southern Africa in October with my family for 15 days or so of vacation/safari. Some overlap is ok... 2nd Q is that I need to pick up some replacement parts for my 02 640 Adventure... Seals, gaskets, hoses, cables, clutch hub, water pump. Any shop recommendations? Thx! |

Renting a bike would be a nono. Prices are insane. Renting a car or a 4x4 would be a better bet. In Johannesburg, I would still suggest driving down to Clarens (Lesotho border) sleeping there and venturing down to Kwazulu Natal (Durban) or going back to Johannesburg depending on time. ![]() ![]() ![]() Get a gps though :)

Great pics!
Will look those places up. I will take my Garmin Montana that has the http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ South Africa maps! Hope they are good enough! Will also take my iPad. You think it's worth getting a prepaid sim card for mobile Internet? |

in Joburg, yes.
you might not have full 3g coverage in the mountains, but it always helps just having a backup plan. mobile data is pretty cheap i think. Sim cards are free, just register with passport. Then buy mobile data from a supplier. You should be able to get about 3gb for around $US 50 (400ZAR)

You won't see any wild animals along this route unless you check into a wildlife park...

Hi there fellow adv's on the other side of the indian ocean. Just checking some pics there that steveo posted, postcard material. Unfortunately, we arnt that lucky over here with more arid country than anything, especially in the west, but we do have squillions of kilometers of tracks though. Most of the time when a few us go for 2 or 3 day venture somebody always writes up a ride report with pics and stories to give anyone who is thinking of doing something similar an idea of what to expect. Is there a thread or sticky that you guys have on something like this, or even just photos.
Cheers, Nick |

Insane?
Quote:
Last time I looked you could rent a bike for R990 per day and a 4x4 Landy for about R1450 per day. So who is actually insane? Me I'd pick the bike any day! |
