KTM 530 EXCR- More better!

I think the bike and I are finally ready for the Mex2Can ride next week. 5 days of riding through the desert from the Mexico border to Fallon Nevada. Got some farkles and extras over the last few months:

Wolfman luggage; enduro tank bag, fender bag, enduro tool bag, and 1 litre fuel bottle with holder.

Clockworks tank
new gearing
HDB handguards
HDB powerlet mount
Michelin AC10 tires
Forks freshened up by SuspensionDR in Onalaska, WA

Had to make some straps to hold the fuel bottle holster on the Enduro Tool Bag




The fender bag makes the bike steer heavy. Kind of different but not terrible. Would not want to ride with all this stuff on all the time.

The fender bag makes the bike steer heavy. Kind of different but not terrible. Would not want to ride with all this stuff on all the time.

How will you strap the TV/monitor onto the bike and where will you put it? Will you wire it in to your GPS so you can achieve a larger font size? Probably not on the front fender, as that would make the steering even heavier... perhaps to the tank bag?

Brief update on the 500... I was never able to solve an intermittent but persistant misfire, and after a few close calls as a result, I decided to stay with the XC4 for the moment, and leave new technology to the experts, people who aren't afraid of laptops like I am.

I'm sure that my experience was unique, and the 500 clearly has both awesome performance and a polish that the older bikes do not... but I'll wait a while before trying that game again.

how long are you guys getting between piston changes and crank rebuilds?

the bikes I'm wondering about are a 400excr and 450excr used for trail riding and dual sport use.
There stock.

After watching the video with David Knight talking about the shortcomings of the 500, I am glad I am on the 08' 530 EXC. The issues I have read about here and other places would drive me nutty.

All good stuff nonetheless.

I've yet to do a piston or a crank.

At ~150 hours you might think about putting rings in, depending on oil consumption.

Just checked valve clearances on my Dakar motors, all were in spec. It's a durable motor, provided it has oil and doesn't overheat.

I got mine a week or so ago. Install was straight forward, and quick to perform. I did need to open up the holes for the pin to hold the plate in position-that was easy enough to take care of.

I also converted to the KTM Euro tail light as well which is a much better fender than the stock.

Twist-a-plate is a good option

Jesus, I rode with a guy this weekend that has an 08-530 EXC. He has right around 300 hours on it. He said it loses a little oil, but he said it has always did that. He has had no issues to date. He rides AMA Duals Sports and Enduros. He is a sportsman class rider.

I think this motor is more reliable than we think it is.

As far as the 500s go,I know Chilly White has said it has a quick hit right off of bottom. Not sure if he i talking EXC or XC-W.

Yeah, I think Robo-Boogie put something like 350hrs on his last bike (08) before he tore it down and did a full rebuild. Said everything still looked pretty good inside. Was just wondering.

Typically I've turned them over at 100-150, but I usually sell them to friends and so stay familiar with them out toward 300.
