The best survival knife is the one you have with you when you need it.
So just carry a decent pocket knife. Same for pistols. The latest, greatest Gigando Max Magnum won't do you a bit of good if it spends it's time in a drawer 'cause it weighs 5 lbs. and it's too big to conceal. A small pocket pistol may not be your first choice, but it sure beats not having anything at all.

Speedo66 has a good point. Spyderco Endura and a Kahr P9. Works for me.

Spyderco?
I was recently looking to pick up a couple of additional Spyderco carabiner clip-on folder knives (I have them on two sea kayak shorty life jackets) and I think they are now discontinued. I remembered buying them through Russell's... but I sure didn't remember the kind of prices I was seeing for similar Spyderco folders. Yipes, did the prices jump, am I getting cheaper in my old age, or is my memory shot? I assumed all three are true... and I smell worse... at least I don't smell very good... never did as I remember... who is that talking? Is that me? Hi there fella! You don't smell very good.... or well, either. Have you seen those Spyderco prices? They stink. So do I? Get off my lawn, asshole!

Just picked up Ontario SP8 and SP2. Made in the USA, and good prices. Probably not family heirlooms, but I am betting they will be good knifes.
I liked that they had saws on the back.
