02 Dyna clutch hub bearing?

Ive recently noticed a faint whine coming from the rear primary area. Doesn't matter if its in gear, sitting or moving it seems the same. Drained the primary oil which looked OK for 5K miles and poped the cover to have a look inside. Using a long driver with light pressure under one of the diaphragm bolt heads and the edge of the primary cover I found the entire clutch basket/ring gear/plates etc assembly can be easily moved up or down about an 1/8 of an inch. Theres a large roller bearing pressed into the inner primary, Im guessin this is headed south??

Check w/ your local dealer. I seem to remember the MoCo paying for some replacements under a "product upgrade program" (read we've gotta do this or get a slap on the wrist from NHTSA). That was few years ago, though.

For some reason, the 02 Dynas had in issue with the clutch hub bearing and the inner primary bearings.

Hum, I have heard lots on the 06 Dynas having a locator pin left out causing misalignment of things, but never on the 02 bikes. Thanks for the info. I'll have a word with them.

Yeah, that was my impression too that it was in the 06-07 models- the dreaded IPB syndrome. There is way to check it, seems like the sound is worse when shifted into gear, rather than a whine all the time. Lots of info on the HD forums Sounds like you won the lottery, sorry to say. Good luck

Oh it's bad... all the time it's bad
Gets louder and louder and it growls to tell you its pissed.

Doesn't just affect the 06 Dyna's... all the BT 6 speeds are in danger. They call it the 16k mile bearing at the dealers... I've had 2 in 37k on my Ultra.

The 5 speed's weren't known for this issue but it's an easy fix. Takes about 2 hours or so if you know how to remove the inner primary. The only big trick is if the bearing has walked and is stuck on the shaft... then you have to come up with a way to cut it out gently.
