We got a surprise in the mail today. Thanks Maine Root!

Chris says thanks for the new air filter too. Very generous considering he was only expecting a used one in return.

Doug I was the guy riding beside you when your wheel decided to take a crap. I just remember looking over and seeing your front wheel doing the hokey pokey and thinking, this isn't going to end wheel. Glad you were able to get it slowed down without taking a sand nap, still not sure how you managed that:)

If I had checked and tightened them at the end of day 1 I probably would have been fine.

That is most certainly a lesson that will stick with me. Amazing how fast the wheel fell apart. I felt a little wobble and thought I must have a flat. It took probably 5 to 10 seconds for half the spokes to get ripped out, some got wrapped around the hub, wheel was flopping wildly between the forks. I still don't know how I managed not to crash, was afraid to even touch the front brake and didn't want to do much with the rear since any sudden move probably would have collapsed it.

Luckily no damage done to the bike beyond the wheel itself and the dust boot on the fork got ripped. So once I was able to get the bike to Loreto I was able to install my spare wheel (the original from the bike where the spoke nipples are probably seized in place and will never loosen up!) and finished the rest of the rally with no major incidents.

For crank to get from Vermont, down to Cabo, and back, and race, and have Mag 7 support, for $4500 sounds pretty amazing. I would have guessed higher.

Perhaps the old hands at desert racing can chime in on other costs.

Anders
Thanks, Yeah I was hoping the Score guys that also raced this event would offer up some info. I was more concerned about entry fees than anything . I know score fees are way up there!

Just googled the SCORE 2011 Baja 1000 fees. Bottom line:

SCORE cars $2,100, bikes $1,650.
NORRA cars $1,967, bikes $1,600

That seems to be apples/apples, since I believe one membership is included with each entry on both sides.

I have raced Score and Best in the Desert for over 40 years.
The NORRA race in the RALLY Format is GREAT
The Score Baja 1000 GREAT

Cost is what you put in to it.
Score Baja 1000 -vs- Norra Mexican 1000
Score under 1000 miles
Norra Over 1000 miles
Entry fee about the Same (pro class) No pay back NORRA
Membership =Same
Hotels/ Camping= Norra cheaper = No pre run trips
Support crews= Norra you can do it easy with ONE support Truck and Driver ( plus you stop at night )
Support crews=Score Much harder to chase can be with one truck and driver if you use a PAY pit crew support team
( Mag 7/Baja Pits/JCR honda etc)
Bike set up for Rally format at Norra easy to keep the bike in 100% race shape

Both race formats= FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Score Baja 1000 Point to Point is a must! you get to race for 20+ hours with out stoping
Norra Mexican 1000 Rally is a must!! You get to become friends with ALL the racers each night at the Bivouac !!!!!!!!!!

Now at 51 years of age and still running a FAST RACE PACE-
I had more fun this year at the Norra Rally then the last few Score Baja 1000.

What is the best RACE???? Depends on what you are looking for????

ALL in all JUST RACE BAJA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
