I may be in the area that weekend.
Question for hack flyers with charity events like this: Do organizers provide liability release for carrying patients? Thoughts or experience with this issue? |

The liability laws in Georgia make a waiver just about useless. When volunteering to do this, you need to make sure you carry insurance that comprehensively covers passengers as well.

Thanks, Matt. I am fully covered! I am surprised, however, that hospitals and charities would not cover themselves.

They very well may. I'm just waiting to hear back from James about what type of waiver, if any, parents and hospital provide on this run. Me myself, I would not personally rely on that in itself, which is why your own personal insurance being complete (for passengers) would be my #1 recommendation.

This is the reply I received today.
Got a reply back from the PBTF folks. Said that they have a million dollar liability insurance policy to cover volunteers, that includes folks carrying the kids. Also, all participants or their legal gardians sign a release prior to the event, no release, no ride, that is supposed to release volunteers and the PBTF from liability concerning any action that happens during the ride. Releases, however, are only as good as the folks who sign them...courts generally throw them out. However, with any endeavor like this, if the rider has issues concerning hauling a passenger, any passenger, they probably shouldn't have one. If they want to participate but not haul a patient/caregiver/parent then they can collect donations and ride in the pack.

I take kids along in my rig at the Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas rides. The PBTF is very structured and well protected. They do not want it to be a Ride for Attorneys in our sue crazy world. The rides are always police escorted with the kids at the front in a group. Great experience for the kids. Do something wonderful and take one of these courageous kids along for a ride they'll love and not soon forget. You do need current registration and insurance.

Just got home after a 250 mile trip to be there, unfortunately there was not enough kids to ride all the hacks that showed up.
Great weather, great people... Maybe some can come to the Asheville in August |

Had a great time! beautiful ride, and great weather.
![]() ![]() Wish they had more kids who needed escorts today. James told me there have been times when there were kids who did not get a ride because there are so many.

It was good to meet you all. James said they raised a little over $100,000 today. He believes the tally was $138,000.
