Sounds like someone misunderstood what they heard and passed along more bad info.
Misunderstood?

Just sayin'

I could see some photographer on the phone gossiping about the upcoming Dakar ride with BMW. "what? They hired a rider for Charlie?" and totally missing that it was to ride "with" him and not "for" him.

In 2007 on another expedition on a KTM I literally bumped into the LWD guys riding through Zambia (Chipata to Lusaka on three R1200GSAs and a GS650) + loads of support vehicles and fixers and crew. I was on my own with my worldly possessions and spare tyres on the back and there was some light hearted banter between us and I think there is a small clip of this on the DVD... although not on the original as I am sure BMW did not like the idea of a KTM being on their show much.

I think the trip could have been done on any bike really... KTM, Yamaha Tenere, BMW GS, Honda Africa Twin, and especially the Kawasaki KLR which is a great bike for the money.

Like on this trip I was quizzed about the reliability of my KTM (and for what its worth this is in our website with other chapters on preparations, equipment and servicing). It seemed according to Charlie Boorman that they were heavily contracted to BMW for LWR, LWD and Race to Dakar and I guess Boorman is now fully employed by BMW. Ewan McGregor I guess is wealthy enough from being a film actor to ride whatever bike he likes, but probably out of loyalty stuck with Boorman and BMW. I asked Boorman who was looking lovingly at my KTM if he'd like a ride and he said something to the effect he was not allowed. There you go.

My view is no different to others I guess that the KTM is a better off roader than the other bike adventurers, incl. the BMW... but the BMW probably just surpasses the KTM as a road tourer. If I do the trip again I would be very tempted to do it on a modified Kawasaki KLR 650 (with upgraded suspension, good Metzler Karoo tyres, less luggage etc). That said I love my KTM, even if they don't love me much.

We did call into Mattighofen and saw the new big KTM adventure being tested (possibly a 1300 cc) that is going to compete against the Yamaha, Triumph and BMWs.... Looks very nice and will definitely give them a run for their money... but it is the new 800 /700/690/640 Adventure that I would be interested in for a true RTW on every surface and condition the planet has to offer .. provided the LC8/LC4 issues below are sorted out:

a) clutch slave and water pump improved and more robust
b) lighter with a power/weight about 0.40BHP/KG at least
c) a replaceable fuel filter as the best places to ride have the worst gas/petrol
d) tyres that can be found in BFNW

I always wondered what happened to you, I seem to remember bore man having Dual exhaust envy !!

Good onnya for getting out there & doing it..

In KTM's defense,

No, not on the phone.... riding with both the BMW photographer and the former Dakar rider in the desert in Nevada last Fall.
But yeah, making the whole thing up....
After all, both movies were documentaries. Must be true!
I look forward to Michael Moore's collaboration with Ewan and Charlie in the upcoming documentary "Head Held High!", where they ride Honda trail 90's to visit women's studies program's in Finland.
I have inside info that Casey Stoner is riding for Ewan and Kenny Roberts is jumping in for Charlie when necessary.

As far as the specific areas that they had riders ride for them, I don't know, all I know is that I was told that sometimes the "boys just weren't up for it." (Ewan much more than Charlie.)
Besides, I don't want to argue with a mythical creature that rides a Gelände/Strasse!
Peace Yeti.
Where's that "Don't feed the trolls!" image when you need it.

ColdC, didn't anyone ever tell you that you don't believe photographers; they're more full of shit than most Hollywood types.

I shouldn't believe the photographer who works for the company that supplied the bikes/support/riders (and has a damn fine portfolio of images for the company), I shouldn't believe the pro-rider that stood on the podium at Dakar and had the conversation, but I should believe a couple of actors, what I see in a movie, and a bunch of fanboys on the internet.
Gotcha.
That's what I love about motorcycling and races like the Dakar. Practically anyone can do it! Next year Jimmy Lewis will be riding alongside Lindsey Lohan when she rides the Erzberg.

I'd be curious to hear from the photographer. I'll ask "the pro-rider" next time I talk to him. I suspect what I hear might be a bit different.

True, but negotiations broke down when KTM refused to pay for hair spray.

Well watching the series convinved me not to ever get a GS because they sure look heavy to pick up and maneuver around.

When I start doing some real offroading ... 250s baby! Put it on a trailer with all your gear and set up camp in a cool spot and I am set.

For touring I keep the poor mans multistrada called versys 1000
