Customizing a XL600R into a Cafe Racer/Street tracker to ride South

Just some motivational shots of what can be done with an xl600r from the mid eighties. Built this a few yrs ago while stationed in the UK.Blast to ride if you could ever get the bitch to fire. I'll never own another without the button.

Revalved CR125 inverted forks
VFR 400 single sided swingarm and wheels
Stock tank with "shrouds" welded on.
Custom exaust
Custom tin side panels and stock recovered seat.

Plan B - ride my cb750 to mexico and hope they will let me back into the US to sort out the XL after a month or so... (bit reluctant to do this in fear they wont give me another visa)

Plan C - ride my cb750 SOUTH thus abandoning my optomistic xl600 project... (dont really want to do this, i want to take my XL)

Plan D - you dont want to know my plan D !!!

Like i said, i have to make my decisions fast because i have to leave this Saturday... with or without the XL

Any suggestions and advice asap would be welcomed..

UPDATE - So the other night after organising to meet Jeremy in San Diego and him generously offering to help me out in TJ, i was busy scanning the web for answers about renewing my visa.. Searched and searched for info about getting an exit stamp to prove i left the us before my visa ran out...

Basically to cut it short i ran into the same answers...

I know its been done, and I know some one of whom made it through, but i dont want to be the person that they say no to... I cant be.

Well i warned y'all, soooo - Crazy plan D...

My concern of leaving the US via TJ was that i wouldn't be able to return without F-ingUp my visa.
After a night of panic stricken research, I decided to take the long way round....

I bought myself a flight South, very south, not the south i intended, but back to Sydney! thats where im from - Australia.
I arrived yesterday.

Dont tune out just yet.. trust me, im coming back.


Im planning to sell my 2 bikes here, 1986 Yamaha SR400, and my very first bike 2006 YamaHarley 250Virago.
I intend to spend 2 months so i can do some work.

Then, buy a tkt in August to (embrace yourselves) Vancouver Canada, buy a bicycle and ride it down across the border through Washington, Oregon and San Francisco then hope to convince someone to sell me a tkt to the infamous Burning Man Fest.. (Not that its my scene ive just heard alot about the fest and I work as a freelance assistant photographer here in Sydney, so i like to take photos and thought if im there at the time i think it would be a unique visual experience at the least.)

Bus it back to LosAngeles, sell the CB750 and sort out the XL in plenty of time.
Thus clearing out this path of discarded two wheels ive already left behind, having enough money, time for further preparation and increased mechanical confidence to get me as far down south as i can handle after that.

Id like to put out a big ThAnKs for tuning in...

When i joined the ADV site and started this thread only a coupla weeks ago, at first i thought nobody was really interested as i starting posting my impractical mods and unorganised unorthodox plans. I thought it was going to be a tough crowd but when i got my first replys of support, it made me all tingly inside that i was onto something special.

Dont get me wrong i dont have grandios expectations to have the most adventurous off the beaten trip ever, im a self confessed newB on a very steep learning curve.
I dont have the knowledge, riding experience or mechanical skills compared to 99% of the ppl here.
I might be asking some stoopid obvious questions and rookie mistakes but ive got some drive and an open mind to learn and i think we've all been cut from the same cloth when it comes to our wanderlust and dreams of adventure.

I will be asking more questions, and and now that im back in Oz i will need all the support i can get to keep me motivated and focused in getting my shite together to come back and get my wheels rolling again..

'All' comments and suggestions are warmly welcomed and noted, ive been overwhelmed by the amount of views added daily and hope you come visit again as i attempt to get more prepared, i'll need your help..

Believe me I'l be back, im in too deep not to. If anything I feel even more excited and focused to make it all happen.
