As we left this area we headed towards Rhinos section of bridges. We did not photograph every bridge but we did stop and admire them. I think we saw something like 15 of his old iron bridges. We also took in two more covered bridges. How could we possibly skip them right? They are rare here in Illinois. First up Thompson Bridge.

As we headed north in search of Rhino's bridges we started passing through some of Illinois Oil fields. The smell of low quality crude was in the air.

As we got near Springfield I felt the incredible urge to blow up something! So in order to keep myself from a jail term we decided to check this out instead. It had a strange lean to one side look as you approached it straight on.

I was not sure if it was just me twisted up about our state government or if it actually had a slight lean in it. I am going with it leaned.

Next up would be one of Rhino's bridges and one of the best. This bridge had a long run up. It was all wood deck . We were on the bridge when the local sheriff drove across. he stopped and talked to us for a while he told us that the bridge was slated for removal and I am very happy I got to see it and cross it before that happens. He also told us that Abe Lincoln had stood on that very bridge and crossed it. It was one of the more unique iron bridges I have seen.

This is as you approach the end of the long walk up the wood deck ramp to the bridge structure.

Notice the placard is missing in the above photo. The sheriff explained once it was known it was to be removed someone cam out and made it a keep sake for themselves.
This is looking back at the end. Frank is standing at the end of the wood deck run.

And here is why they are no longer safe. Notice the pitting and how the steel has decayed and caused the steel to spread and buckle. I love these old bridges and will miss them as the disappear. In fact the only way you can see them now is by traveling as we have. On roads never traveled. They would have already been gone due to the traffic.
