Just bought an XR650R super moto

I just picked up a 2000 XR650R that has been converted to a super moto setup. I haven't picked up the bike but the seller said the PO lowered the suspension 6" internally. Since the deal includes the dirt wheels, I'd like to bring the suspension back to stock, any idea how difficult it would be to raise the suspension back up.

Note: I am not an expert in suspension lowering.

What are my options?

He probably cut the springs.
Find a new/used set of them. You might as well get the ones for your weight if you're going to have them apart.
The only issue with going back and forth is if one way is set up geometrically correct, the other one's going to be off. This means adverse handling. How adverse depends on your skill and speed. Motards are tricky to get set up perfectly.

I could see cutting the springs dropping it a bit, but I'd imagine there is a bit more work done than just that. I guess I won't know until I get the bike (hopefully tonight). I'll have to see if there is a common setup that maybe was used on this bike so I can figure out how to reverse it.

I'd rather be able to ride the bike off road well and have the SM handling suffer a bit.

Worst case scenario, I buy another rear shock and a set of CRF450 forks.

That actually sounds like a good idea to me so.... more like if things go well.....

I've actually been curious about the XR650R as a SUMO. Keep us updated how you like the bike.

haha, well I'd like to make the as budget friendly as possible. I may even sell the sumo setup, not sure yet, have to ride it. I bought it for dual sport purposes.

Typically they put a limiting bushing in the rear shock to drop it, and then just slide the triple clamp down the forks to lower the front. Of course there is probably some valving changes as well.

I like the idea of getthing a different shock, but you do have to almost remove the sub-frame to install it. If you do get another shock, try to find a cr500, they are suppose to be better with a larger res.

hmm, I have a cr500 in my garage for sale, maybe I can throw the xr650 shock into the CR...thanks for the heads up.

I haven't ridden it yet, hoping to pick it up tonight or tomorrow night. 6 inches does sound quite extreme. Of course we all know how much misinformation is often given. I take everything I hear from the PO of a bike with a grain of salt. The bike will be thoroughly checked over when I get it.

Well, it is indeed lowered 6 inches, the rear is easy, I buy a new shock. The front is not as easy, I'd like to avoid buying new forks as I don't really want to dump a ton of money into this bike just yet. the forks are not dropped at all in the triples yet they appear to be at least 6 inches lower, the seat height is absurdly low, like 30 inches (not measured).

There's gotta be cheap internals out there...unless they had to cut the tubes too for this conversion.

Post #4 I believe explains what has been done. The springs were cut allowing the front to sag like crazy, then a spacer was put in on the rod which keeps you from being able to pull on the bars and bring the bike back up to stock height. This makes sense to me. I guess I need to disassemble a fork leg and see. If that is the case, all I need are some stock fork springs which I'd imagine I should be able to find cheaply.
