Started packing

With a couple of days to go before I head to London, I started packing.

First my home for 3 months.


I'm taking my trusty and reliable Garmin 660 Zumo and purchased a World Map and Street directories for Europe and South East Asia.




My SPOT Connect is also a worthwhile addition to give my loved ones a little piece of mind.




Forma Adventure boots, waterproof, and very light when compared to dirt boots. They're good to walk in and you don't feel like you have a swagger like John Wayne.




Three sets of gloves to cover all eventualities.




My helmet is waiting for me in the UK. I'm happy not to lug that around.

Now, just got to pack the camera gear.

I have followed your videos on youtube, and I really like the way you get it together. I ride a tenere at the moment and much thanks to the "high country test". I do longing for the chance to ride in the simpson. Wish you all luck :)

Arrived in London

7.20am, just about to have breakfast....in London! Got to my hotel around 12am. Greeted with a light rain.

Today is a big one. I MUST get my Kazakhstan Visa submitted today as that has a five day turn around. I plan to pick the up late next week and then one to go, Kyrgyzstan with a four day turn around and three days later leave for the adventure.

Hopefully all goes well this morning, then on a fast train to head north to Darren's then straight into bike preparation.
Darren has been incapacitated with his broken hands, so we are a bit behind. I haven't had an opportunity to speak with him, but my understanding is the bikes get set up by Rally Raid over the next couple of days. Darren will film this and we'll post shots.

Other items of interest will be the USB chargers from Adventure Moto and a another 12V output for running the GPS.

Kazakhstan and visit to Rally Raid

4.30am UK time. Still dialling in to local time. Clearly have a little way to go!

The Kazakstan visa application had always bothered me as I couldn't easily get it in Australia. I was also aware that there is reasonably big queue and sometimes the office shuts down and people get turned away. Second in line, all paperwork good and pick it up next Friday.

Although paperwork is still crucial, today was a significant milestone in converting from a clerk to a rider.

After visas, headed north on a fast train to Milton Keynes and caught a cab to Darren's.

About a half an hour later I heard a knock at the door and out the front was a Rally Raid Products Van,,:loll, being driven by no other than Mr Rally Raid himself, John Mitchison. We jumped in the van and John took us to Rally Raid HQ, where our bikes were being prepared.

As Darren had warned me, I quickly discovered that John had an encyclopaedic knowledge of KTM690s, developed from an intense passion of motorcycling, racing the bikes, preparing bikes for others and sharing racing tips and tricks with fellow riders. In terms of some engineering challenges, he has actually gone to the KTM Factory in Mattigofen to discuss matters with key specialists for the 690. Now that's commitment!

John's design principles are very straightforward. First solve the engineering problem, but equally as importantly, it has to integrate seamlessly to the existing design of the bike and use exactly the same fixtures and fittings. There are a number of added advantages to using standardised fittings. Firstly the one tool can be used to strip and, or, maintain the bike. Secondly, there is a built in redundancy when things don't go well and parts can be swapped to keep the bike going.

We've all seen outstanding problem solvers in the Adventure riding community, but there are not too many, who go to the lengths John has to set the 690 up perfectly. He showed me his 3D cad drawing of fuel tanks on his computer that he designed, made moulds and produced. This is a driven fella, that is making the world for 690 riders a better place.

It was a great privilege to talk to John as he and Dakar mechanic Martin, built our bikes. Fortunately I have videoed the lot and John is keen to use this material on a new website he is developing that will explain to purchasers of Rally Raid Products the what for, and why's of installation and will greatly enhance the paper based instructions currently available. As we only have a couple of weeks to go before we leave, I won't be able to publish much if any of these discussions, on youtube, but I will do my best to put something out.

Anyway enough talk, here a couple of pics. More to come in the following days.

The bikes were stripped down and 'broken' in half to fit a stronger rear spring, fuel tank modifications and rear tank mounting improvements.

MOre Rally Raid pics

John cautioned that there is a trick to fitting the Akropovic muffler that many riders get wrong. The mounting bracket is asymmetrical and many put it on the wrong way, thus 'pushing' the muffler out from the bike with the consequence of melting side covers and other nasty side effects.



My only regret during the fitting of the Akrapovic muffler was not weighing the difference between that and the standard. It felt like the standard was twice the weight! The sound and power improvements ensure a win, win, win.






John is always thinking of how he can improve the products he has manufactured. Unfortunately I didn't get a shot of this for today, but the bash plate has a recent modification that now ensures the rear brake cylinder and other bits and pieces down there are protected.



We'll use the 3 litre fluid capacity in the bash plate to carry oil.

Got some fit in the UK

Got to take the Rally Raid 690 out in the dirt today. Mind you, finding dirt in the UK to ride on is difficult. Found a green lane with some loamy soil which was ideal to acquaint myself with the 690.

In summary, very impressed, but we need to go back a revisit once the soft luggage is in place and the bike is fully loaded.

News reports not true

The news reports are just outrageous and wrong in fact. It wasn't a family of hedgehogs, it was a family of Monk Jacks (yes that's correct). Small deer. It's just when they get hit with a new TKC80 in soft loamy soil they end up looking like hedgehogs.

Anyway ten working days before we go. Lots to tidy up and stacks of running around.
I have to pick up my Kaz visa on Friday and then straight over to the Kyrgyzstan Consulate. Bike stuff to get straightened out, including 12volt power supply, heated grips, and fitting of a USB charger.....more on that later.

Next job is a practice pack. If we weren't taking the cameras it would be a hell of a lot easier. We will be using a Giant Loop Luggage system mixed with a little Kriega, water proof bum bag and his mounted back pack. Pics to come.
