In the mid 1990's I did some touring on this naked bike:
![]() I did the Colorado Rockies with a bunch of other pals on old bikes. I could not believe the bike was rocking and rolling at 45-50 mph through the high passes! |

Just spent some time on my Wee Speed riding back from the folks house in Texas. 1200 miles in 2 days. Was pretty fun, but hot as hell! (Yes, there is a camel in the background... and that's in Colorado. Go figure)

Let's bring this one back, as I hope to be touring naked again real soon.
And just to add to the thread, a few photos from several years back touring on my 2003 Z1000. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Naked Tourer
Here's my naked touring bike; it's a 2009 Honda 919 with Trax Bags from Twisted Throttle:
![]() ![]() ![]() I just got back from an 1100 mile trip with some friends last weekend down to the Dragon's Tail, and it was great. While the wind pressure is different than a faired bike (more force straight back directly on your chest), the lack of buffetting is worth it in my opinion. I'm 6'2", and short windshields typically put a blast of wind right at my Adam's apple, and make my helmet buffet like crazy. For on-road riding, this combination is hard to beat for the money. I was able to pick up the bike for $4500, and add bags for about $700 more. For $5200, I've got a fun, reliable bike that I'd be willing to take across the country in a minute. And since it's a cheap, "standard" bike, it's cheap to insure too.

Picture is mostly self-explanatory.
![]() 2000 mile, 5 day trip. Bike was more than fine with the stock windscreen, nice clean air. Or rather, nice clean wet air, we caught a bunch of rain. The Ventura luggage worked out well too (it's expanded in that picture to the evening's supply of beer). I had heated gear with me, but would have appreciated heated grips as well. Other than that, it was no less comfortable than my Sprint ST, and frankly more comfortable under 80 than the Sprint.

I just picked up a 2001 Yamaha FZ1 that I plan to do some extended asphalt touring on. I think they consider it a naked bike.

I gotta say, a naked bike with no windscreen on the front and saddlebags on the back is such a good look... very balanced and sleek.

And, IMHO, way more fun to ride than a plastic-fantastic tour barge! Seems to me a major part of the fun of riding a motorcycle is not being "protected" from the environment. Sometimes you get cold, sometimes you get wet... sometimes you pull over and have a beer.

Ok, the more I tour on a naked bike at 80+ mph constantly for hours when I have to super-slab from Salem to Seattle every weekend the more I want a windshield. I did it for a year in the rain, etc.. but I'm getting a little weary.
naked is okay, but a windshield (even small) will go a long way |
