Quinn Cody at KTM

This should be any interesting year. KTM is certainly putting a hell of a team together. Wonder what this means for Quinn and his next Dakar attempt.

Seems like an awesome guy, and one of my favourite riders.

KTM Motorsports proudly named its four-member 2012 Baja Racing Team:
Kurt Caselli, Ivan Ramirez, Mike Brown and Quinn Cody.
KTM returned to Baja racing two seasons ago with support from outside sponsor Bonanza Plumbing, and in 2012, KTM will remain linked to Bonanza Plumbing but is investing resources to put forth a true factory effort in the Baja race series, hoping to capture the victory at the premier Baja event: the Baja 1000.
As the KTM team’s most experienced Baja team member, Quinn Cody has collected 4 Baja 1000 titles and 2 Baja 500 titles. He is also a former Dakar Rally Rookie of the Year and was a member of KTM’s Baja effort the last year the team competed at the factory level.
“I could not be more excited to be a part of KTM’s new Baja program. With 2012 being one of the most competitive years in Baja racing history, I am looking forward to applying my experience to the team to help put KTM on the top of the podium,” stated Cody.
The team will compete aboard KTM’s 2012 450 SX-F. The dual-overhead cam, carbureted engine has been very successful in Dakar Rally racing. Team Manager, Antti Kallonen, says “We are very fortunate to receive support from the KTM Factory in Austria. The team will receive the same engine as the Dakar team runs and we feel that motor is perfectly designed for the challenging conditions of Baja racing.

Quinn was injured earlier this year in the 250 race and will sit out the Baja 500. - Dakar legend, Marc Coma is to fill in for Quinn.

“The idea of one day participating in this rally has always excited me,” said Coma. “This is an event that isn’t so well known in Europe, but it is one of the most important off-road challenges around. I don’t want to let another opportunity like this go to waste. After so many seasons riding I am spurred on by the desire to do new things, and an event like this is hugely motivating.” Coma has been drafted into the US team to replace the injured Quinn Cody.

“We needed an additional rider for our team after Cody was injured earlier this season,” stated Team Manager Antti Kallonen. “We are very excited to announce that our search brought one of the most gifted and well-decorated rally racers of our time, Marc Coma.”

Lot's of different reports on the replacement rider for Quinn Cody. Here is one that seems reasonable -

Earlier reports look like KTM is still scrambling to come up with a final plan. -

Marc Coma is a hellva replacement for Cody. Sucks he's injured, but it will be cool to see Marc at Baja. Kinda a nice to see the respect Baja gets from him.

The biggest BAJA news for KTM and Caselli’s 7x bike is the addition of 3-time DAKAR winner Marc Coma from Spain. Many consider Coma to be the best off road racer in the world and he is no doubt in a peak physical condition.

Here's an interview with Alex Doringer, the team manager for KTM's rally & offroad teams.

It's curious in the fact that he doesn't mention Quinn Cody when he talks about the future factory riders for the Dakar Rally.

It could be that the interviewer just didn't ask about Quinn. It looks like Taddy Blazusiak has a future spot on the factory rally team.

Quinn's sister Anna is quite the rockstar also, being the first woman to solo the Baja 1000 in 2006.

The interview would appear to confirm KTM (Austria's) practice - since many years back - within rally circles of nurturing talent from it's own orange farm, to make up the inner sanctum of it's factory effort... as opposed to "hiring guns" that come from other teams... Look at all the KTM "waterboys" that have come and gone over the last four/five years...

But "long term" riders make up the core of what KTM has done for the last 15 years or so in rally terms. The "KTM inner sanctum" is where both Coma and Despres did their apprenticeships... similar is true of the teams previous rally mainstays; riders like Cox, Roma, Brucy that came before them... Even the "originals" like Kini, Arcaron's and Meoni had longstanding associations with KTM and when they "brought in" guns for Dakar, often it was from their ISDE/Enduro KTM squad ranks... Giovani Sala and Kari Tainen for example.

So that when KTM talks about the future as far as rallies is concerned... it's not too surprising that they would have their own creché of talent foremost in mind. With less and less factory squad seats available these days (unlike the four to six rider factory squads that teams like Yamaha, Honda, BMW and KTM once fielded in the late 90's/early 2000's), the liklihood that KTM advances from within it's ranks... as opposed to recruiting from the competition... seems rational.

Thanks, for the insight, Troy. - I guess Quinn was a "Red Rider" for too long and has came late to the rallye game.

I haven't heard if he has Dakar 2013 plans. - Maybe if Quinn can help bring a Baja 1000 win to KTM they will help him with some factory support in the Dakar.

What is going to be sweet, will be watching him bring his high-speed skills to battle the Aussies in the Australasian Safari. - - He will be on a top tier team with CPW.

What are your thoughts on the Baja Ace's chance of a podium finish in this year's Safari?

Quinn is participating in the Australian Safari later this year (September). It will be his first time there!

Quinn has some solid nav skills from his past 1.25 outings at the Dakar and various training/nav rides he has completed at home in the US over the last two years.

He is fast, smooth (generally) and has plenty of speed/experience from riding/racing/winning in the desert/Baja offroad scene in the USA.

The CPW team is at the top tier of the Aussie offroad/rally/desert racing scene down under, having provided it's top riders Ben Grabham, Matt Fish and (before he went to GHR) Todd Smith with bikes capable of podium placings/victory at both the Safari and major Aussie desert racing events....

So those three things (on paper) would put him up as a top ten start number/seeded rider for the 2012 Australasian Safari, I would think.

Quinn has - however - no racing experience in Australia. The terrain, some of the rules/navigation subtleties AND the level of commitment with which the current crop of the the top five or six Aussie Safari riders attack the seven day rally (at sprint pace!), will mean that Cody will have a very short period of time to adapt/find a pace at which to run with the locals in the opening two/three days of the rally.

He is capable of top ten times out of the gate... but to achieve top five times from the outset, on debut (without any prior Oz safari/terrain experience)... that is a big ask for ANY rider - no matter how big a name they are. (Just look back at the 2011 result sheets ).

First time out in Oz... I would think that by the end of the rally QC would be up on the pace... a top five finish is achievable and with some good management/relatively problem free run with the CPW/KTM outfit behind him, a podium placing is not out of reach... however (I believe) unlikely.

There are at least seven or eight (fast/experienced) local Oz riders shaping up this year, all with past podium pedigrees, ALL on top tier teams from three different supported brands of machine... and ALL are gunning for the top podium spot this year... It should make for a great race at a blistering pace!
