Sooner or later...
I have either a slightly leaky one of these...
![]() Or a slightly leaky one of these... ![]() http://mechanicalhusbandry.com/2010/...ear-main-seal/ And although I can't say it's quite this bad... ![]() It still involves getting to & removing one of these... ![]() http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...uildup-54542-5

![]() http://members.chello.nl/~wgj.jansen/text/BMWR1.html I'm really taken with this BMW R1, and not just for the water cooled engine (which really does seem to turn out to be upside down), or the rotated induction/exaust ports, or the Desmo valvetrain. But for little old 'never be able to build anything like this' me there's a massive amount of just pure goodness in the frame & front/rear suspension. Not being able to do this is why I have what I have.

Sorry to hear about your oil leak, planktonnn.....let me know if you want a hand lugging your engine
up to your penthouse pad to effect mechanical repairs. Or, alternatively, just throw your bike away and have a couple of my fleet for as long as you need them; in fact, if there's any ADV'er's would like a new airhead, just help yourself, I've got plenty as can be seen from the pic.

I guess that rather than pull the engine out I'm more slightly more inclined to get it up on the paddock stands and drop the swingarm & subframe out, pull the gearbox, remove the clutch & get at the flywheel with the engine still in the frame and renew the rear crank seal & oil pump cover seal together when the time comes. I'm also inclined to tighten the head race, bleed the front (K) brakes & replace the front & rear wheel bearings. At the same time I think I'll wire the oil pressure switch back in if I can work out which one of the draw full of wiring tails is the right one. But not yet, for now I'm just going to carry on riding the shit out of it

We did use a lump of wood to hold the flywheel, because it most closely resembles what our
heads are made of....it worked well enough though, both on undoing those forking-tight flywheel bolts and then doing them up again afterwards, although I seem to remember we didn't go the whole hog of doing them up to the book-torque of a massive 105 Nm........you have to leave a bit of room for creativity when wrenching, or the machines think they're better than the humans and that would never do. |

As far as this current weeping rear crank seal/oil cover is concerned, I think it'll take a good couple of days work to get in, get it done, and get out again. 'Days' taken as in the universal measure of chatting/drinking tea/pointing etc. Were I to get it done by the Dave I guess I'd be looking at dropping the engine out for delivery, in which case I seem to recall DBD getting a rear seal done for around £30 including parts? That rings a bell anyway. It would of course be the most sensible route, but I've enough trouble raising the funds for a rear seal & oil cover O ring, let alone the labour costs of someone else doing it. Anyway I'm inclined to leave it for a while as it's only weeping/misting slightly so it can wait a bit, not least because the DMW is my only form of transport and I could do without being stuck off the the road... I'm slightly inclined to deal with the rear wheel bearings first tho/ough, and to get the wheel balanced as that's the only real drawback to having recently changed the rear tire/yre myself. I got the tire/yre swap done easily enough, but I don't have the facility to balance it myself. Still, onwards & sideways I'd be happy to take a bike from your aforementioned stock, but would it be possible to select one from your secret stash as pictured below?... ![]() And now, back to sleep for a bit. Toodle Parp!?!
