Coast to Coast on the TAT

Ready for another TAT report?

Day -1 6/28

Initially, we (my 17 yr old son Ryan and I) planned on riding the TAT but then we decided why not back it up a little and do a coast to coast ride. I bought a couple of 2009 KLR 650s, added some extras, bought the maps from Sam and acquired a route from Savannah, GA to Tellico Plains, TN from NorthernTraveler. We decided to truck the bikes to Georgia instead of riding them so we loaded up a Budget rental truck and headed to GA.

During our first gas stop, I noticed more gas was hitting the ground than was going into the tank. The fuel filler hose was split in 2 places. I called Budget road service and an hour later Richard showed up. He didn't have a hose with him so he had to go to Napa and get one. 2 1/2 hours wasted

We made it to Savannah and dropped off the truck just before they closed at 5:30 and headed for the Atlantic. Since we're heading back to the coast in the morning to take a pic of the sunrise, we just took a couple of pics and headed back to Savannah and got a hotel. We're staying in downtown Savannah about two blocks from where the bench was that Forrest Gump was sitting on. We went look for the bench but found out that it was only for the movie so we just grabbed a bite to eat and headed back to the hotel. Ever heard of a fried egg on a hamburger? I hadn't but it sure was good!

More to come.......

Sounds awesome, and what a great stage in life to share an adventure together!

I contemplated riding with my 17 YO son on a trip I did in Central America in April, but to his disappointment I just couldn't accept the risk of exposing a new rider to the reality of third-world traffic conditions. This is probably a decision I will regret, but your trip is certain to strengthen the bond between you and your son, and provide a collection of memories that will last many years.

Looking forward to following this ride report.

Day 1: 6/29

So we woke up early so that we could get back to the coast to watch the sunrise. Got the bikes loaded up and headed the 15 miles or so back to Tybee Island. We made it to the beach with about 2 minutes to spare. Took a few pics of the sunrise and even let the lifeguard take a pic of us together.

Pics taken.....now time to head West

Before we head out, I guess I should start by letting ya'll know about our riding experience levels. Not much at all
I rode dirtbikes everyday from about 3 yrs old til 15 yrs old. But once I got my driver's license, I didn't care about dirtbikes anymore. I'm 42 now so that's 27 yrs since I've ridden. Ryan doesn't have any experience at all. I take that back. We each have about a year experience but not a ton in that year. I bought these bikes last summer for the specific purpose of riding the TAT. We've done a few little rides and last month we rode Sam's Mississippi Hill Country ride. It's a 2 day ride with each day being about 250 miles of Mississippi dirt. Ryan has really surprised me. I'm sure we'll have alot of tough spots in the month to come but we're both up for the challenge.

We may not have a ton of experience, but we did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night

So we headed out. Today's ride will be about 200 miles to Augusta, GA. It's a good thing we weren't on Tybee Island during high tide!

I expected all of today's ride to be on pavement. I thought I had looked at the route in Google Earth but I guess I hadn't. After about 60 miles or so, we left the pavement. It was a very welcome surprise but it was sand. Sand sucks. I had never ridden in it before. I know there is lots of it on the TAT but I figured we'd gradually get introduced to it. We had lots of it today....probably close to 80-90 miles of our 200 miles today was sand. We both did pretty well in it though

We found an old Model A for sale on a sand road out in the middle of no where. Good Luck with that buddy!

These donkeys were very interested in hearing about the TAT

We even came across a nuclear power plant. Not sure why this gate was open. There were signs saying "Warning Do Not Enter. Armed Security" but the gate was open with no one around so we rode in.

We only went in about 200 yards. Had to get to where we could take a pic.

The highest the temp. reached during our ride today was 100. It really didn't feel too bad as long as we were moving. We made it to North Augusta just before 1pm and got a room at the Super 8. Just under 200 miles today. Looking forward to tomorrow................

Subscribed...way to go Father n' Son. Wish I could do it with mine.

Cannot wait to see what you have to say about Tellico Plains, TN and the trail head which begins on Witt Road. Rumor has it that it has 5 water crossings..so be careful of the 2' 'er!

Don't forget to get your Moto stuff if you need any at http://www.tellicomoto.com/... they also have first hand info on the TAT but they're not open on Mondays.

Ride safe , ride far...

Cheers...

Have a great time. Really cool of you to do this with your son

I just wished I had starting reading this a month from now, cuz i want more.

stand up and get your butt back if you start to feel uncomfy in the sand..then gas it...its been helping me. Your riding back round is very similar to mine.

Thanks. We figured that out eventually. I'm satisfied with the way we did in the sand. Just wondering how deep is deep sand.
