Bultaco as a Dual Sport

I have a cool old 64' Bultaco Matador/Sherpa that I put together and I am just starting to learn to ride trials on it. It is just right for the kind of riding I want to do.

I also have a very big adventure bike (1200 GS) for my long distance and big adventures, but I'm looking for a short distance more off road fun vintage dual sport bike. I really, I mean really don't like to go fast so was thinking a trials bike with a nice seat and some bags might be a good choice. So there is this 68' Bultaco Sherpa for sale that looks in really good shape, that is titled, licensed and has lights and I was thinking how cool it would be to use it as a dual sport bike. My friend and mentor for my trials riding says the Sherpa is a competition bike and I should be looking for an old HondaYamaKawiSuki.

So I thought I would through this out to the forum and see what you all might think?

Would appreciate opinion on why I SHOULD and why I SHOULDN'T!!

I used to ride a 74 Bult on/off road, and it was pretty awful for road or trial riding. Too low geared, and not very comfortable to ride sitting down for any length of time. A trail bike will be a much better dual purpose bike, unless you are riding very technical off road most of the time.

When I was a kid my uncle and aunt took me to Yellowstone park. While there touring the geysers and such, I saw a guy touring the park on a yellow Bultaco. Some 45 years later I still have the image of that yellow Bultaco in my head. I guess it started what has become a lifetime of riding. A few years after that trip to Yellowstone I got my own yellow Bultaco 100cc Lobito. I rode the wheels off that bike...
Later I raced Pursangs and earned my expert license on one. Now I have a 79 Sherpa T that ride in Trials, I guess you could say that I like Bultacos.

And I think your idea is nutty!

But you should buy the bike anyway and give it a good home. (That means riding it, thats what it was built for)

I'd look for an Alpina. Same platform as the Sherpa T, but with a larger tank & seat.

Huzband nailed it. An Alpina would be great. I had a '72 250 back in the day. See if you can find a 350. I wish there were more modern versions of this kind of bike today.

The 68 Sherpa is a very old "fashioned" trials bike good for both purposes in my personal view, it is not so advanced like the Sherpas of the mid 70's and later in terms of trials riding so it can be ridden very well even for trails.
(As a result of the development of the Sherpa model 92 from 1972 Bultaco invited the Alpina in 1973 for trail riding).

The Sherpa's from 1968 to 1971 where the model 49, from bike serial number 490 242 onwards the sherpa got a new chassis, mudguards and the engine outer cases where modified too. At the end of the 60's /beginning 70's Bultaco invited the "Kit Campéon" with a different seat and gas-tank combo togethter with an different airbox and exhaust to make the bike even more trials reliable. So if you can get an early 1968 model 49 and the bike is not pimped with the "Kit Campéon" this bike will do trails very good.

As said it is much more a dual sport as the later model 92 shown here:

That's the exact bike I had, in 326 form, when in high school. Jeez, how I wish I could find one now.

That Sherco 290 looks great, but I doubt the 2 stroke will be street legal here. Same thing w/ a 350 4 stroke (and a wide ratio 6 speed) would be perfect.

Certainly there are other brands and models that do work much better as an dual sport bike, but as the TO asked about Bultaco ...

Anyway nearly every classic trials bike is in my personal view easier to use as an trails bike as you can sit on these bikes too (compared to modern trials bikes). At least up to the beginning eighties.

If money would be no problem get two different.

Yup. At least I could I could sit on my 326 if I had to. Try that on a semi-modern trials bike.
