NW China to the Tibet border

Just did an 8 day ride on a 250cc, Chinese enduro bike, from Kunming, NW to the Tibet border.

Fantastic scenery, big, rock landslides, it's all there

No option but to turn back

Lots of nasty roads, There's a full report in the www.RideAsia.net link below - 6 pages. It was a great trip.

Even managed a ride into the Tiger Leaping Gorge, the 3rd deepest gorge in the world.

How did you manage to get into China and do this solo? And how much did it cost you? This is my dream, I have two years to find a way

Did you rent or buy the bike? Any contacts in Kunming you can share?

I had plans to do pretty much this ride but it fell through. I was planning to cross from Vietnam into China at Nanning and get a bike there, but moving onto Kunming was my backup plan if I couldn't find what I wanted in Nanning.

So, presumably you know someone who is a resident there and they registered it in their name? If not, how did you go about buying and registering it?

To do it legally... You need a Chinese DL ... So your visa needs to be for 6 monthes. In Beijing at the moment there is a crack down on both unlicensed riders and illegally licensed bikes... Gas stations are requesting blue book and your DL to fill gas. Took my scooter to holhott and was stopped 5 times by police checking my paper work.
Will be doing Beijing to Dali this October ... Bought a house and moving to Dali.
Out of all the cities in Yunnan ... Dali is by far the most beautiful. I have been travelling the regions are years now .... Dali should have been named Shangra La ...
