the cobwebs of time...

Identifying a Japanese mini bike... 20 years on...

I've looked through the photo pile, scrap books and so forth... I can't find a pictue or reference to the bike and rider anywhere... But I do recall him... and like GTinAus and Safariaddict say; it was definately in that 1990/91/92 period. (So long ago that one event blends in to the others sometimes?)

If anyone can find a photo of the lil' Screamer, you can quickly determine the year it is from:

1990 bikes still ran the ACU standard number plates; black numbers on yellow background.

1991 had the computerland logo on the top of the adhesiv rally discs.

1992 had the PIAA logo on the top.

One thing I did find while digging about (on topic of 250cc two strokes), was a shot of AJC's 1989 KDX 250 Kawasaki Safari bike

The theme of the last few posts and topic of "small capacity bikes" in the Safari made me go back and look at some statistics. Now bearing in mind since the WA rebirth of the Safari in 2007; the trend at the front of the pack has seen a tendancy to go back to the more nimble 450/530cc single cylinder enduro based type machines (as opposed to the big 600cc+ fourstroke singles that dominated from 1985 to 2004), and the terrain and style of the race today, clearly favours a better handling offroad bike, than the big desert landyachts of yestyear.

So for anyone considering a 250cc or sub 400cc mount for the Safari this year, here is a quick (not comprehensive) list of those riders who have achieved a class win/finish in Australia's premier multi day endurance event before; certainly something to strive for...

WINNERS of the "tiddler" classes - Oz Safari 1985 to 2011...

1985: John Crawford KLR 250
1986: John Taylor DR200 (4th OUTRIGHT!!!)
1987: "No sub 350cc finishers...?"
1988: "No sub 350cc finishers...?"
1989: Fred Powell TTR 250 (9th outright)
1989: Allan Cunynghame KDX 250 two-stroke (10th outright)
1989: Hisao Usami (Japan) DR 200R prod.
1990: Allan Cunynghame KX 250 two-stroke (5th outright)
.
This should fill in the 1987 and 1988 results.
1987

1988

Motorcycle catagories in 1987 and '88 were - Marathon G1 Up to 250cc
G2 251cc - 500cc
G3 501cc - 1000cc

Improved Production H1 Up to 250cc
H2 251 - 500cc
H3 501 - 1000cc

In 1987 Fred Powell came 7th outright riding a TT350 (346cc) Class H2
Ahihiko Sawachi arrived in 12th outright riding an XR250RH in Class H1

In 1988 Fred Powell finished 9th outright riding a TT350 in Class H2
No H1 class machine finished.

Just a little point worth noting re: 1989 - the fast KDX blue- smoke couldn't beat a lowly 250cc Yami TT250 4 stroke

Thanks "A"... I thought I could rely on you to fill in that part of history... I put the question marks in hoping you would...

Have duly copied your contributions into the "tiddlers" winners table, and included those dead sea scoll "Wynns transcripts" from '87/88 into my database for future reference... tah!

Hey Troy I think I can help out with the year. I seem to remember one of our club members employed by safari to ride sweep to " help out " the jap riders and I think he mentions starting from amaroo park. I'll ask him Monday night when I see him

80 Enduro Bikes - November 1984

Seems they were around well before the late 80s, at least in Enduros

No worries mate, I think we have enough '85 - '89 memorabilia to pop a server's pooper valve if I dared to upload it all!
