I use one (Baja Designs) but don't turn it on. It's only in case of emergency - lights fail, gotta work on something, wad the main lights up, etc... Mark, we're old! I must be older 'cuz I can say "in 29 years of racing in Baja" ;-) |

Also the lights on the 990 are not on the forks so the don't turn with you. It might be nice to light into a turn.

Actually the best set up for a peninsula race is stem mounted like you have. Every now and then a 1000 is twisty enough that fork mounted works good, but overall, an especially to La Paz, stem mounted is the way to go. It handles better without the top heavy feeling and with so many fast miles of flat tracking it keeps the light in line with your rear tire, the direction you're going.

So my water pump went the other week and I finally got some of my parts. I might as well get it ready for the baja and replace some other parts.
![]() CJDesigns water pump kit, fuel pump kit, slave cylinder kit, 2nd fan, adv pegs, misc ![]() HID bulbs in different temperatures 3000K , 4500K, 5000K, 6000K. I ordered them all in order to test which color is the best on the eyes. ![]() I got both 35W and 55W ballasts in order to test the differences. ![]() Some other pieces... new rear fender (mine is broken), head set bearings, euro light switch, and misc. ![]() Now it's time to put it all together.

Last night I changed my water pump. I got the CJDesigns kit and things went pretty smooth.
Open things up ![]() seal is toast ![]() new shaft ![]() the manual calls for heating the housing to 150C so I used to oven to get the bearings out after about 10 minutes at 150C my IR temp reader reads about the right temperature near the bearings ![]() first one just fell out and the second one needs the C clip removed ![]() needed to make myself a special tool in order to torque the impeller ![]() the hole is for the socket ![]() I had never done it before but it was all pretty straight forward. This CJDesign kit says it's good for 30k miles so I hope that will last the preriding and the race.

So I started taking my bike apart to look it over and make some mods....
![]() Found a crack in my rear header pipe. I think this was caused from the couple of times my exhaust strap broke and the bumps transfered weight to the header ![]() So I weld it it up. ![]() I got my bike together and it works...it's the cleanest it's been since I bought it. I made a much more heavy duty pipe strap as the stock Remus one broke on me twice. So I now have a new clutch, new water pump, new slave cylinder, new shorai battery. The battery weight is a big difference! ![]() Bad news is I have some bolts left over.....good news is I've been trying to lighten the bike up so it's all good! ![]() Got it together friday night and went on a 7 hour rider on single track doing the A and B loops on a local rally. No issues. View from one of the trails
