how much should I expect to pay to have a spare key made. Can I go to any locksmith or BMW only?

AFAIK, the keys have a transponder in them which can only be sourced from BMW. Of course, you might be able to replace both the lock and keys, but them germans may have connected the ignition lock to the CANBUS, just for shits and giggles

Didn't you get three keys when you got the bike? Did you lose two already?

If you have the key code you can get it from BMW for a reasonable price. If not prepare your anus. A baseball bat will get you in shape for the upcoming pain! GH

I purchased the bike from the original owner and he only had the one key.

$63 from the Stealer in Canada. Probably a bit cheaper down your way.

I didn't have the key code when I ordered a replacement. They got it through BMW records via VIN #,$63CDA.

WTF

BMW Australia told me that if I lose a key - $370, lose both keys it needs a new CPU or whatever the unit is called - $1600.

I have the spare key in a safe place.

If only I could remember where that is?

Not sure WTF those things are arrowed in your photo, but they're not transponders. The electronic bits are inside the plastic head of the key. AFAIK, all 800s come fitted with this (as it's a regulatory requirement in many markets and cheaper to make one model than introduce the complexity of two different ignition systems - same reason lots of Euro bikes now all come with ABS like it or not).
