If you settled on a helmet try swapping out the shield for the stock one -- or if you haven't one try w/o a shield. That will let you know if the shield is dumping turbulent air at your helmet and creating extra noise. You can always cut the shield down if it's the issue. You want you head in clean air -- either air protected by the shield or above the messy air and just have the shield protecting your body.
Helmets are sorta like shoes for me -- spend a lot of time picking one and then keep your fingers crossed.

Re Helmet: I had a Shoei multitech which was the quietest flip up helmet I have owned.
Now have Shoei adventure style helmet (Hornet). Not as quiet but it fits my head.
Until recently toured on my G650 Xchallenge with and without small screen and the wind noise was ok.
Never wear ear plugs.

Re wind noise: I picked up my new (to me) F800gs and rode it home. 4 hour trip.
It came with a tall givi screen. The wind noise was terrible. I stoped at a garage 30 minutes into the trip and purchased a set of ear plugs. I simply could not bear the noise.
Luckily I asked for the original screen when I bought the bike. Once I got home I put the original back on.
Have done a couple of 3 hour rides without ear plugs. Much better .

Though it does depend where your head is in the air flow.

The givi will go on trade-me. (NZ version of ebay)
