I'm headed to Namibia and Botswana in November. Can't wait!

On your blog you said a 4x4 is necessary to go to the dunes at Sossusvlei. I hadn't reserved a 4x. Is that the only way to get up close and personal with the dunes without a guide?

Botswana for me in November too!

Sossusvlei is fookin' sandy and a 4x4 trip is an easy option, but obviously not that cheap. I'm not good enough to attempt it on the GS12 I was riding, so we took the tour, booked the previous evening at the camp. Very nice it was too with a picnic lunch an' all. There's some stuff in my Namibia report (see my sig)

BTW, when I clicked on the blog link it came up with an error.

Not being funny or anything, but the country looks deserted. I just flicked through the first 10 odd pages of your blog and apart from you and your wife, there are no other people to be seen. What's the population density of Nambia ? Looks like the right country if you want to totally get away from it all.

Thanks for that. The tour sounds the way to go, at least for Sossusvlei. The rest of the trip will be on our own.

Great pics, just as we assumed. We've been to the NW of South Africa, Cederberg to be exact. SO doesn't laugh anymore when I say 'looks like Arizona', cuz I've said it in Oz, East Africa, SA, India, Chile, Morocco, etc., but it does.

I'd like to do a bike trip but SO will have nothing of it. Mind you, I say that without ever having done a dirt trip, so maybe not.

That's what makes it so cool. IMHO, nothing worse than being surrounded by people. Give me the possibility of being somewhere that I can wait quietly until some kind of wildlife saunters by or see a sunset with just the wind for noise and I'm happy. Watching people is depressing.

Actually our population is 2.4mil at the moment iirc. Its just that most of those touring routes take you through the mostly untouched regions. I love the place and i will probably never leave.
