Yeah, IIRC there's a torx on the top and bottom
And be careful when tightening them down -
it's the first fastener I've stripped in 4 years.
God damn housing is made of cheese.

luggage, carrying camping gear

Thinking about buying an 883 iron but concerned about carrying campping gear on a sportster. Does any one have pics or ideas on carrying campping gear?

Cheap set of throwovers with homemade supports and a couple of dry bags. Under $200 for enough storage to do a couple of weeks on the road. This setup has worked fine for the last 3 seasons and I can swap from my Sportster (the black one) to my KLX300 in about 15min. It has also worked out fine for my dad (blue bike) even during a month long 7200 mile trip. If hard bags are your thing there are quite a few manufacturers with them but they tend to be spendy.

It sounds low-tech, but having a backrest opens up a lot of possibilities, from t-bags to just having another rigid place to strap stuff to.

Adding a sissybar makes it go from before to after in about 5 minutes max.

What's the torque spec, 7ft/lbs?

I bought an in/lb torque wrench for working on my XLH.

Don't forget a tank bag: there is not a speedo or anything dumb like that on the tank, and it makes a handy place for wet weather gear, money and camera.
Just don't get one that is too big: they bump against the starter switch in low speed turns!

Thanks for feed back

Thank you for ideas. When I go to most rallies I take, a days food, water, billy ( for boiling water ) , tent, sleeping bag and my new down inflable mat. . I have been riding a ktm 6
40adv and using tank bag, top bag and a pair of soft sadle bag. Will that weight be a problem. I like ralies but the ktm 640 sucks on the highway ( but great on the shorter mor
e dirt type rilies ) . Time to expand fleet I think.

cheap tank bag and a wolfman duffle.
no bike mods.

its all one unit back there.
its a duffle with sides that hang down like saddlebags.
Inside is my tent, sleeping bag, food, mess kit, booze' an atlas, rain gear
and maybe a pair of underwear.

It's a rocking bag, that wolfman.
Ebay find for $100

Isn't that how everyone dries their shirts?
