Thanks, Doug

That's the best pass for an old bike, speed limit is 35 mph for most of that.

If you're looking at pavement through DV you'll have to deal with one big pass, ask directions at Panamint Springs for Wildrose Canyon, it will take you around the big pass that you can see from Panamint.

What do you folks think is the best way to get across the valley? Remember Doug wants to stay off freeways entirely. We're already on the east side of Oakland, so some of it is already behind him. I don't think there is a "nice" route, but what about practical, safe one?

12 is probably the safest, first thing in the morning because nobody is going that direction.

Glad you made it Doug. Congratulations.
It was great to see you again at Spirit Lake. Wish I could have seen more of the ride. I'll plan to see more of the next one. I hope nobody gave you any crap for riding bitch on the oldwing.
By the way, the shot of you at the HD building would make a great mural.
Good luck and be safe on your ride home.

Rusty

re: Tioga Pass, the east side of that is pretty darn steep all the way down.

my favorite cross-the-valley non-freeway route is 132, but you got to get out of the SFBA, and other than 580, I dunno. I doubt you want to go over Mt Hamilton

You probably want to go into Yosemite on 140 so you can do the valley floor loop, then climb up Big Oak Flat to 120 to Tioga Pass.

I had to run out & grab a few things for the bike.
pete says 'you can ride my v-strom.....

OR... you can ride my old rigid triumph bobber......

there was no consideration needed.
But the right side throttle feels a bit strange, & why is the clutch pedal on the handlebars? it was really hard to get my foot up there.

I also dont think many folks in oakland liked my helmet...

Thanks Pete!

I'd take the back roads over the hill thru Canyon to Moraga, back roads to Walnut Creek, then take Ygnacio valley rd, then R on Clayton rd, which turns into Marsh Creek rd. Then to 4 east. Stay on 4 till you hit 49 south, then E on 120.
+1

I'd go up into the Oakland Hills and take Grizzly Peak Road till it turns to Skyline. At the fork take Pinehearst up to Canyon Rd. Then take it down to Moraga. I recommend taking St Mary Road at the fork. Then take Glenside Dr to Reliez Station Road to Olympic Blvd. Ride that to S. Main in Walnut Creek.

I'm in Lafayette and a stones throw from Moraga border.

Hi petefromberkeley and rtwdoug,

On our vintage and small dual sport bikes here are a couple of practical, safe routes ...

We like to take Grizzly Peak/Redwood Road to Hayward, Palomares Road, Niles Canyon, Vallecitos (Rt 84) to Tesla/Corral Hollow to Right on Linne to Right on Kasson/River Road to J16 to Snelling to Hornitos Road to Left on Old Toll Road and into Oakhurst to 41 into the Yosemite Valley ...

This looks like a bit out of the way, but the trade-off for the person who has never been to Yosemite Valley is the Tunnel View into the Valley floor on 41 ... priceless ...

The shortest way we like to go is Redwood Road, Palomares, Rt 84, Corral Hollow, Linne Road, Kasson Road, Left on Airport to Ripon Road to River Road, 28 Mile, Rodden Road, Orange Blossom Road to Knights Ferry to La Grange Road to Red Hill Road to Rt 49/120 to Rt 120 ...

These routes stay off the interstates and bypass Tracy, Modesto and Oakdale (River Road) and Modesto (J16) ... and keep you off 4 East into Stockton, which we just did on our vintage bikes, and it sucked ...

Here's a pic of rtwdoug at the GGB lunch stop ... My friend Kalle snapped the pic ... our club was responsible for lunch and saving space in the parking lot by the bridge for a goup Cannonball Rally pic, and helped escort the racers to Dudley-Perkins ...
