TLR's often seem not to rev out fully almost as though there is some form of rev limiter function in the CDI unit, which means changing main jets is not going to make an awful lot of difference. Cheap pitbike CDI units provide a much better spark over a wider range of engine speeds, and in combination with a good exhaust, correct alterations to the air box, and properly set up carby will mean running is greatly improved.

Thank you Twinshock, this was part of my question at the top of the thread. Can you give me any clues as to which CDI unit to go for? I need one with 6 wires and I think it's an AC unit....most units I have seen on web are plug in... the TLR has loose wires, which could be joined in to plugs to fit I guess....but which wire goes to which pin?

Cant help with 6 pin CDI units as these are 12v DC, and not sure they would work on a TLR? They are easily available from Ebay though, but no idea of how to wire one up. The 5 pin Chinese CDI units are a very good idea for TLR's as they provide a much stronger spark, and advance curve at lower rpm means more power at lower engine speeds. Best of all though they can be found on Ebay for less than £10, and are bulletproof reliable (had one on a TLR for 5 years no problem at all).

Ok, will double check the number of wires, would think it;s an AC unit as it's quite small and fits inside the top tube of the frame, it's the original TLR CDI. See picture below.

I bought a 6 pin Chinese cdi from the Lifan dealer but only 5 pins are utilized. I confirmed spark but have never used it. Grizzly sent me a used oem one and thats the one I've been using.

Thanks Neil, if you look at the picture above, it has 6 wires coming out of the unit....was your standard one the same or different to this?

Stock TLR CDI unit has 2 green earth wires, when you fit a pit bike unit, simply connect green terminal on HT coil directly to earth. This type work fine: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/90cc-110cc...item20cb8ca2ab

You need a 5 pin CDI, as the 6 pin ones are DC type intended for bikes with battery powered, rather than AC ignition system as used on the TLR.

This is where I got the one I have. You have to hunt around but there are some wiring diagrams that are helpful. I used the stock wiring diagram and 2 of the wiring diagrams on hoopers site. They're on sale for $27!

Hi, tried putting choke on at full wack....didn't make any difference??? hoping to borrow another carb (standard) to try out, just to see what it does. will report back when I have tried it....could be a few weeks though.
