My problem with the IS3 is mainly the armor. The speed is good and the gun is fine, but no matter how head on I get with a target (which is how i've read it need to be) everything punches through.

Just like the IS-7, and all tanks (except perhaps German tier 8's and 9's after the new patch - we're having troubles with those all of a sudden), the lower glacis is a soft spot for smaller tanks if you are head-on. But I agree - I seemingly pen the upper fronts of IS-3's with my T34.

This would be a good match-up in a training room to get an idea of what we're looking at. Invite me, SpearFisher, when you see me online and we'll see what we think.

Smurf, thank you so much for posting that. The PzIV is just crap now. I've played two games in it, and been in the thick of it in one of those games... and I no longer see it as a true tier 5 tank. It just isn't what it was, and it doesn't hold up its part of the bargain anymore.

I will sell it now before those sale prices come into play.

Anyone else having massive connection issues post-8.0? I've been disconnected every other battle on average all evening. It's severely frustrating.

I think I read about a few disconnect problems on the WoT forums, but I haven't had any troubles, and my clan mates didn't report anything either.

I have been having some problems, but thought it was me....it has been stormy here and just marked it up to that. The lag light is blinking like a RR crossing.

Perhaps we're all looking at it wrong though?

For 242 battles I have a 54.9% win ratio in my IS-3, and a 1780 efficiency rating (used to be 1800 a short time ago).

For my T34 I have 51.6% wins for 315 battles, and a 1691 Efficiency Rating.

My average XP is a mere 3 points higher in the IS-3, with the damage being less than 100 points more per game than the T34.

But then the T34's stats were wiped clean and restarted when it became a Tier 8 premium tank. This means that, from the get-go, it had all of its equipment. Moreover, since it became a premium so late in the game, I had had plenty of time to screw up and/or learn tactics, and the need to work up to the better gun and turret on the IS-3... so those less than stellar games are in my IS-3 stats.

I'd have to say the IS-3 is the better tank - unless there was some nerf for 8.0 that I don't know about.

-------

I'd almost claim that the IS-3 and the T34 have equal guns, though I ended up with some surprising big hits with the IS-3 in a game last evening, so I'm not sure.

The T34 is fine for camping and hull-down emplacements, but the IS-3 both has the angled armor and the mobility (i.e. speed) to get things done.
I checked my stats for the T34/IS3

T34 - 97 battles, 50 victories, 46 defeats. destroyed : 42 hit ratio 67% Damage 78000.
IS3 89 battles 32 vics 57 defeats. destroyed :28 hit ratio 65% damage 37500

Gun on the IS3 is D25T, Gun on the T34 is of course the stock T53A1

For nearly the same amount of battles, that's a huge difference in damage. Survivability on teh IS3 is 23% vs 36% T34

maybe that training room thing is a good idea.
The T95 beats my ass no matter what tank I'm in

I havent got to try the PZIV yet, we looked at some of the maps in the training room lastnight, my finger was hurting to much to do a lot of clicking so we just playing around to see where we could or couldnt go. I'm also going to back down from the 88 on my 3601 and try the 75L70 gun on it now that the PZIV no longer has it.

Also I'm getting 100+fps now with everything turned up.. WOOT!!!

oh and where the hell is the premium PZIV they said we could buy? I guess they will wate and let everyone forget about it then bring it out and it will own like it use to and eveyone will be like i hat people who buy premium tanks and and and... yeah.........................................

So it will be long enough for us to forget about how the tank really was.....that way they can take away half the armor, and nerf the hell out of the gun.....you know be on par with the rest of the german stuff.

Comparing the T34 and the IS-3 makes little sense, especially pre-BL9. Of course the T34 is going to do more damage.

D-25T: 390dmg, 175 pen, 0.46m accuracy
T53: 400dmg, 253! pen, 0.35m accuracy

By normal distribution, the D-25T will bounce the weakest point of the T34's hull 30% of the time. In contrast, there is literally no point on the hull front of any tier 8 heavy that the T53 cannot pen a majority of the time.

It's important to remember that all the tier 8 premium heavies have tier 9 guns and tier 7 hulls (except KV-5, which is reversed in that regard).

Feel free to summon me into a training room on the weekends. I have a T34 to practice against, as well as an IS-8 with a very similar hull armor layout to the IS-3.

Ya know, those premium Pz4 and Panther tanks look pretty sweet in their tier bracket.

So the question is: should I resign myself to owning a German tank. Or wait for the inevitably uber Russian equiv in 0.9

Are you comparing a not fully upgraded IS-3 to a T34? Keep in mind that any and all premium tanks are already upgraded to be equivalent to something under what they could be if they were offered as regular tanks with research-able equipment. In the T34's case the gun is considered a fully upgraded part (for its tier), while the motor (and, really, hull since it is so similar to the T29) probably isn't.

Unless I have the guns mixed up, you're rolling around in an IS-3 with a gun that was the top gun for a tier below it. I'm just not seeing how that is a fair comparison.

T34

400/400/515 HP248/297/60 mm4
r/m
0.35
m
3.4
s
-10/+15

IS-3: your gun

390/390/465 HP175/217/61 mm4.86
r/m
0.46
m
3.43
s
-5/+23
The gun everyone else uses:

390/390/465 HP225/265/68 mm4.53
r/m
0.4
m
3.43
s
-5/+23

What I'm seeing there is that the IS-3 that serves me well has 225 pen, while the t34 has 248 pen, and that the BL-9 has a faster rate of fire. I see that the T34 has more pen, but for very nearly the same damage that IS-3 creates more damage per minute (as long as I'm not aiming at a T29/T32/T34 turret's front).

What is your in-game name? I'd like to see how you're doing with other vehicles ... forgive me for conjecture as I don't know if you've had 2k battles or 10k here, but what may be happening is that since the IS-3 is so much faster than the T34 that you're rolling into danger and being put in bad situations more often... though if that really isn't the top gun for the IS-3, I can also see how you'd be unable to shoot it out with anything that mattered.
