HS#1 Bartow Blast at Clear Springs

Finally it's here, the first HS race of the season! Central Florida Trail Riders (CFTR) was the hosting club and they had acquired a new piece of property in Bartow,Fl. After the first race being cancelled due to water issues a month ago all of FTR was chomping at the bit to start the season and the turnout reflected that with a packed parking area. Sat course is 7 miles and Sunday is 10.

Saturday dawned with clear skies after steady rain on Friday night. Haley headed out for practice lap and I waited....and waited...and waited. Much later than I was comfortable with she rolled in with the report that she had gotten stuck 4 or 5 times and wasn't going to race..it was unsafe,no fun, etc. I left her alone as the morning marched on as I heard about some re-routes around the rougher areas. Between myself telling her the course would dry out/reroutes, the only way to learn to ride in mud is to....ride in mud, and her mother telling her she had paid 50$ and Haley was going to do at least one lap like it or not, soon she was on the line. She got a good start and headed off to see what fate held for her.

After all the worrying that took place on the practice lap I was surprisingly calm as I waited for her to pop out of the woods..there she is! She was actually looking focused as she headed out for lap 2..then lap 3. Seems the course had gotten much better and she was having fun!

Race over, fun had, and the thanks to her mother for making her ride completed. EE soft seat was a big hit too.

The rain gods were kind the rest of Sat as we stayed dry and the course got better for my Sunday 10:30 race start. I have moved up to the Super senior class this year as my plan to not get faster just older continues full speed. I'll be racing guys 45-50 yrs old so maybe I'll get better finishes...or not. Our line is full with 19 guys as the horn blows and I'm off. Good start puts me top five after the first few corners.

(Notice new white fender after enduro creek dive)

The course is rough at times but more importantly..fast ! I like those kind as I suck at corners and I'm soon through after 2 laps in a solid 5th. I'm passed by Frank G. (#325) who is a race winner and fast guy in the class. I keep up for a few miles hoping to get a pull from him and it's working. I lose him in a tighter section as I come up on a slower rider in a bad spot but I gain some confidence. After a while I'm passed by good friend Marcelo D.(#15) and I latch onto him. I'm pacing myself off of him and we run for a few miles as we come up on one of many muddy ditches. Marcelo dives in just as he hits the shifter with his foot and finds neutral...diver down! I hear him cursing as he is thrown off into the manure-infused mix and I chuckle inside as I ride off thinking I'll never see him again....or not.

The club is doing a great job of rerouting us around the widening mud holes and whooped out sections as i try and look for new lines. Lap 3 is almost over when I'm passed by #712 on a Honda..he's fast. After we pull through the chicane to start the 4th and last lap #712 pulls over like he's done for the day so I'm back to 5th. I start riding conservative...don't screw this up I think. 3/4's of the way through lap 4 I come up on a mud hole I just blasted through before, but now follow a slower rider to the left and seemingly safer route. He stopped for a second and now I'm screwed as I had forgotten to down shift and am stuck in 4th. The mud is so thick I can't rock the bike to drop down gears so I get off the bike and try to use my hand to downshift...by goes Marcelo (#15)...cr@p now I'm out of the trophy hunt !!! In what seems like forever I finally get going knowing I have to track #15 back down and pass him in what little times left. A mile or 2 later I'm back on his heels so I decide to just sit behind him and wait hoping he's make or a mistake I could capitalize on. 1/4 mile to go and he let's off just for a second and I'm ready..on the gas and the pass is made! Keep it together to the finish and..

Finally got one in the "B" class ! so tired but it feels so good. The magnetic screw/bolt holder is now stuck to the fridge at the house as a reminder how good the weekend was. Hope the rest of the season goes as well for us both.

Until the next race,
Haley and Troy

HS#2 Strickland Ranch Showdown # 3

...anyway, this weeks stop in the FTR season brings us to just outside Daytona Beach to the Daytona Dirt Riders/Strickland Ranch Showdown # 3. With hurricane Sandy just off the coast anticipation was high concerning how she would effect the weekend...all for naught. A bit of rain on Friday made conditions for the weekend great especially on Sunday with blue skies and cool temps. The course was tight at times with a healthy dose of palmetto's and mud to keep thing interesting. Sat was 7.5 miles and Sunday 11.

Haley's race started with the usual nervous anticipation as she headed off mid pack into the woods. 14th place was the standard throughout the race even after getting kicked off line and having to head between 2 trees that were narrower than her bars..bam! Knocked her head pretty good and sent her to the ground wondering how she got there yet was able to pick the bike back up and soldiered on. After the race her head was hurting pretty good and yet filled with the desire to do better the next race!

Sunday dawned with great weather and cautious optimism. The quads had really tore up the softer parts of the course but usually after the practice lap it starts to get a "bike" look/feel to it. The bike fired in one kick but I soon realized I should have probably started in first as I clutched it trying to get it to accelerate in 2nd gear. A 4stroke slid up inside on me so I was 5th heading out to straight near the start.

The first 4 guys start getting away from me. As we start to come up on slower riders from the classes in front but I'm not catching them in the right spots and lose the lead group all together. In the tight stuff I'm sitting to much and working my arms too hard.."hello" arm pump. I try to keep a light grip but sawing the bars back and forth takes it's toll. Out of the corner of my eye I see a flash and #15 Marcelo Dadone (gentlemen I battled with last race) has taken a good line and cut the corner to pass me. Well I know I have to follow him so off he goes with me in tow.

We come up on a slower rider and follow him for what seems forever. I keep waiting for Marcelo to yell at him to move over but he doesn't. I usually won't say anything the first lap especially when guys are battling for position but this rider was by himself and I can feel the guys behind us catching up..I even start yelling hoping the guy will move over. Finally Marcelo gets by and now it's my turn. I catch him in a tight section of single track...no where to get by and Marcelo disappears. Not long after #42 (David McArthur) bonsai's past me..dang this ain't going to plan. Few miles later #42 is down so I roll through lap one back in 6th.
Not long into 2 lap I drop the bike. No big deal but the bars are bent. I stop to straighten them against a tree and the 4 slower riders I just asked to move over and passed are coming back by...sigh. I stop again because the bars not being perfectly straight is driving me nuts (worth taking the time to get them right). Personally I won't ask someone to move over twice for me if I made a mistake that let them back by. I work on re-passing the slower riders and roll through to finish the 2nd lap still in 6th.

3rd lap a few of the Senior B riders who I initially passed are back behind me. I wave them around in case they've found their 2nd wind . #428 (Daniel Aitken) is flying so I tuck in behind. Eventually he heads off into the palmettos and I pass him back. I hear some one behind again and it's #428B again, I wave him around again and have to hustle to keep up. A mile later he's off in the bushes again and I tell him he's looking good as I pass by again..this guy has to be getting tired of picking the bike up..ha!
At one point a look over my shoulder and see #325 (Frank Gamperl) and think "Crap that's Frank I gotta get moving!" We come up on a mud hole that I manage to pick the inside line and miss all together...Frank not so much He said he got stuck so I rolled in to finish 6th for the day. Could have been better, could have been worse, but with 5th/6th place to start the season maybe I have a chance at getting a trophy once in a while.

See you at Bartow!

Great job, T-Bone! Sounds like things didn't quite go as planned, but you stayed on the gas and still got decent points. Way to persevere.

Good work T, the course was fast but tricky in area's. I augured in pretty hard and finished 12th I think. Looking forward to Bartow 2. I seen stars on the inside of my visor ;-)

HS#3 Salute to Veterans

I hate when work gets in the way of me writing these reports
Great course, elevation changes, awesome spectating !

Haley didn't have a good day. She has lost some weight by eating right (Isn't that annoying!) so the bike is definitely too stiff for her now. I told her to just go and ride, don't worry where you finish and she did just that. We talked afterwords about her total lack of confidence in what the bike was doing and decided to have Tom Flemming take the bike back with him and give it the works (sprung correctly, revalve, etc). She's really excited about the next race and so am I...just want her having fun.

Speaking of suspensions I knew my bike had been under sprung for my weight since I bought the bike. I was having so much fun I didn't care but now I needed to get the bike to turn better. Tom Flemming as a band aid till a stiffer spring could be ordered put 4 turns in the rear shock..yikes! Turned better, but one problem, I really have a problem with touching the ground! As the horn sounded I tried to throw my leg over the bike and just about missed..ha! I struggled to get the kicker down as usual and suffered getting to the first corner. I headed out to the course in 9th place..worse start in a long time and some work to do.

My practice lap routine has changed this year as I'm really looking for new lines to make passes. As we dump into the long woods section it starts to pay-off. I manage to pick-off a few riders by making good choices. I see Troy Weeks(#863) ahead and watch as he takes the high line and misses a newly formed and straighter line...pass made for now. I apologize profusely as I pass a slower rider and push him to the outside of a corner I came in too hot for "sorry! sorry! sorry! sorry!".

Eventually I'm at the chicane to end the 1st lap and that's where another issue raises it's head..I can't figure out what position I'm in. Seems I had been entered accidentally in Senior B, not Super Senior B in the computer. Normally It's no biggie but it also screws up me figuring how many laps we'll do for the race. We usually do 4 laps here so of I go with the plan to manage my energy (ends up I was in 5th!)
Not long into the 2nd lap and troy Weeks comes back by me, I try to keep up but not happening. Later I'm trying to get around a slower rider in the woods when I get the bike jammed between 2 trees and Frank Gamperl(#325) comes around me..dang it! I settle in to follow Frank and see how far he can pull me along. Soon I pass through the chicane in 7th place behind Frank.(not that I knew that) We're having fun as we pass my bud Ryan Turner(#34B in SB) and I holler at him to get going.. I know he's having a bad day when I pass him..ha! Few miles later Frank gets hung up on a vine and unceremoniously removed from his bike! He says he's okay as I motor by..only to come up on (2) SSB riders laying on the trail and struggling to pick their bikes up at a chock point in the trail. I yell "your killing me guys!" as I wait for them to get up and out of the way. Soon I'm back to attempting a break away from Frank..and it was working or so I thought. At the top of the last steep up hill prior to the elevator I struggled to take the right turn in the soft dirt(can't touch..argh!) and back by comes Frank...sigh. Oh well, I'll just follow him and try something on the 4th lap. We come through the chicane and I see the checkered flag..what, it's over?:((7th place)
Not being able to see my time I didn't realize we wouldn't make 4 laps..oh well but it was strange not really being that tired after a race...that is rare..ha! It was a good day with great friends and can't wait till the next one. See you there!

My boy Frank G and myself..good times!

HS#4 Myakka River Log Jam

This weeks report comes from Myakka,Fl which is the site of the Myakka River Log Jam presented by Old School Dirt Riders. The course is usually one of my favorites with a good mix of tight woods, open fields and some stream crossings to cool off in. Sat. track is 8 miles and Sunday's 11.

Haley's race started off with whimper of sorts. The bike started but she was so amped up she forgot to put it into gear..oops. Once that was handled she was off for 90 minutes of fun, and not so fun.The bike with it's improved suspension was much better.. " I have never gone that fast through the woods" she later exclaimed but other issues rose to the top. It seems she was having problems passing an Evo SeniorB rider who upon hearing her yelling stopped in the middle of the trail..which resulted in Haley running into him and going down..apparently this happened more than once. Afterwords we talked about passing slower riders and the responsibility being hers to pass safely and sometimes having to wait until it could be done quickly and safely.

The next issue is being lapped by EvoA rider JP Wilson and deciding to try and follow along, which I told her was a good idea, up until the creek jump right by the scoring chicane. Seems he took a line where he jumped off the steeper section (landing gracefully on both wheels) and up the other side..Haley wasn't expecting the sharp drop and firmly planted herself in the soft sand minus the bike. I'll give her credit she was up and moving quickly (wrecking in front of the crowd will do that) to complete a total of 3 laps. She was mad/frustrated afterwords not to do better so I told her sometimes going fast about is making right choices and minimizing mistakes. We'll keep riding and getting used to a better handling bike along with polishing our mental skills.

My race started out similar to Haley's. I was so distracted by the new use of Haley start box I forgot to put the bike in gear...grh! I headed off into the woods mid-pack figuring it'll be okay..it's a long race..little did I know long.

We get to the first deep water crossing and I see Troy Weeks (#325) take a line up inside a small palm tree just on the other bank. I follow him and just as he passes it the palm frond swings back and grabs the bike.....ooooooover the bars I go. The bike flips with me and is now facing the wrong way as the rest of my class attempts to slide by. I apologize to (eventual Women's A winner Kerri Chambers) as I had caused her to check-up and dump her bike also. Soon I'm back underway with lots of passing to do.
So I spent the rest of the lap trying to get to the front. I catch back up to Troy Weeks at the end of the lap and settle in to try and get by. I look over and in disbelief see the enduro course..what?? Seems I had been too focused on passing Troy plus under the assumption he would take the Hard split so we were on the bypass. This was roughly 40 seconds longer than taking the endurocross section..dang it! The 2 lines merged just at the scoring chicane and I see riders I had passed before and now have to do all over again..sigh.(7th place at this point)

I spend 1/2 the lap trying to undo the damage. I come up on newly minted SSB rider Jack Hatfield(#392) for the 2nd time who's a good friend and a great rider so we go back and forth a few times..so much fun racing buddies! I'm following close on a slower rider when I look over..I did it again..missed the cut-off! At this point I almost cried..I'm riding well, feeling good, and I shot myself in the foot again. Totally dejected I can't even look at the scoring chicane as I head off to try and salvage what's left of the race and my dignity.(5th place at this point)

I manage to get by Troy Weeks and hook up with a GMA rider by the name of David Johnson(#103). At first I was hollering at him to let me by but as time went on I realized he was faster in some areas and was running a pace I could keep up with most of the time...I had my rabbit. We hooked up and were flying! He even pulled over at one point to waive me around and I motioned at him to keep the lead. Eventually we come up on Marcello Dadone(#15) whom I've had fun battling so far this year. I holler "Wooooooo" as we both pass him and I know he didn't see me coming I really make a point of looking for the hard/easy split this time and see it as David takes it anyway. Towards the end of the enduro cross section I look over and see Marcelo but I know I have it covered if I don't screw up. I roll through the chicane with the white flag still out and I finally look up to see my position...2nd!!!

It's almost hard to believe as I head back out for a potential lap 4 following my rabbit David for the whole lap..it was fun!! I ended up coming in at 2hrs and 1 second so my 4th lap didn't count but was good training running that hard when I was that tired.
It was later determined that a rider in my class had a malfunctioning transponder so I got moved back to 3rd but this is still the best I've ever ridden in the B class...so happy!

That's a cool plaque Troy, I took 100' of red tape in turn two and entered woods dead last. Managed to get to fith, I had a great race actually. After the smoke cleared with scoring I'm in 2nd place in points. I'm not looking forward to the first few races in "B" you guys are putting in some good lap times. These old guys don't slow down man.

At least you looked festive with that red wheel Nice job battling back to 5th and yea these guys are fast but one plus is there's less traffic for you to deal with in the "B" line.
