Just had a deal on a 1999 BMW 5 series wagon pop up from a friend.
I'm really tempted, the price is right and it drives like a bat out of hell. It needs struts and an ABS module. What else should I be looking for?

Had one of these as a loaner from my dealer last week. Very nice.

Manual or auto? Six cylinder or eight? How many miles?

Auto, six cylinder, 111,000 miles. He's asking 4200 bucks.

The question being? Sounds like a winner on a low mileage, relatively recent solid sled with no obvious defects. If you find some when you dig, you're still likely way ahead on the deal.

That's what I was thinking. GOing to pull the trigger on this deal this weekend. Did find the trifecta of lights. Want to verify it's not the abs module before I make the deal. I like to have a little negotiation headroom. It does need new struts and shocks. Everything else looks great. It drives great even with the bad struts.

Sitting at car shop now. Had a wheel bearing go bad while up north this week.
I should have done them when I had a chance. I hate paying shop price. My fault for being negligent. The car has 336,000 on it now. I should replace oil pump soon. And rear wheel hubs. Hopefully first thing in the new year. I really like having a wagon. I'd like to downsize to something less thirsty though. I'm thinking a Clubman may be in my future.

^ Dirtydeeds, what motor and what mileage to get in this? I have been looking at these and wanting to stay away from the V6 cause I hear it is anemic. Nice to see that you have racked up plenty of miles.

I have the 5.7 hemi in it. It's been a solid motor. Hauls a 3 place Moto trailer really easy.
A $10 seal on a transmission plug leaked, rear discs got chewed up rather quickly and the oil pressure sensor needed replacing last year. Also the clip that holds the sun visor needs to be replaced. A pressure sprayer will get passed sun roof seal - but rain hasn't got in yet. Tie rods were replaced last year. Edit: lower control arm bushings need to be replaced. It's an AWD model, so the mileage is a bit lower than the standard 2wd model. When I got it, it was pretty consistently returning 22-24 mpg. Pulling a trailer with full size bikes brought it down to 18.5. I've done a couple mods and put wider, 22" rubber on it. It's dropped to around 20 now. Still 18.5 with the trailer. ![]() I've been thinking of getting a car top carrier for it. Then I could keep dirty, oily MX gear outside of the car. dirtydeeds screwed with this post 12-13-2012 at 08:33 PM |

^ Thanks for the info. I love wagons and I have this insane idea of attaching a roof rack to hold my 14' barge of an ocean kayak on top. I just keep thinking it will kill the lines of this wagon and I may get sniped at down here in SoCal.

![]() ![]() I am thinking of getting one of these used as my daily commuter..ugly as sin but i like them..Saturn LW300
