Day 3 continued:
Stopped in Tropic for fuel and a lunch-like snack that consisted of lemonade, a banana, and an excellent apple turnover (like 3" thick and flaky form a local bakery). There was a gaggle of big dual sports mostly GS's, doing the same, Mejican plates, traveling together. We said hello but they weren't much for talking...They were also headed for Bryce. As they let caught a view of some ADV decals but never got a screen name...

Usually through mid Oct, but can vary quickly- esp over Boulder mountain that is 9000 ft or so if on HWY 12. Has been pretty dry and warm thus far .
The biggest potential is AM ice in the shadows over the mountains after that.

Left Bryce, North on Johns Valley road toward Antimony- then on to Koosherm, and Richfield...
Great north/south route but the posted speed limit is slow

About 1100 miles over 4 days, she held up nicely

One of the most glorious Thanksgivings I've ever celebrated was camping, riding, and bicycling in the Moab area several years ago. We stayed for five days and had the place literally to ourselves. We had a bit of snow overnight once, but nothing that hadn't melted off my 9:00 or so, with lows in the upper 30's and highs in the lower 60's the whole time. Weather can be very fickle late in the season, of course, but the canyon country can also be glorious later in the year. You can't believe the stars when you're laying out on the slickrock in late November and there isn't another soul for miles around.

I rode my GS around the Grand Canyon once in late November (to clebrate my birthday) and had even the South Rim to myself. There were some slick spots on the asphalt in shadow areas, but I just took it easy and watched for it. There were elk all around, eagles, hawks, and ZERO tourists!

I say go for it!

The fall can indeed be one of the best travel times, particularly Moab as prices and crowds fall off.
Bryce can be a little more difficult later, it is 4000 ft higher than Moab.

We have spent the last 15 years at Moab for New Years - I know what you mean.

We live at 7000' - this time of year and later, a couple thousand feet makes a bunch of difference - didn't realize Bryce was that high!

Did the White Rim last January - icy on the north slopes - the desert is great in winter

First photo, good stuff-- went over the "hogs back" 2 weeks ago fot the first time with my wife on the back, she loved it.

Second shot- You've stumped the band -- I'm guessing outside of escalante somewhere, but I have no memory of any standing water in the area

Okay, I'm going to help you out, Signal. When your bride lets you know she needs one of those "get-a-way weekends," call the Boulder Mountain Lodge in the town of the same name and make a reservation. You've seen it on the left as you headed south on UT 12. Tell 'em you want a nice view of the pond from your deck and they'll put you here:




Also, make reservation at Hell's Backbone Grill as it's on the property. They've got a good beer & wine list and the jalapeno soup is great.
