I have resorted to some technical engineering to devise the best bit of garage craft I could muster. It is not pretty but it is funtional and should protect the USB. I wish I would have gotten a straight mini USB as opposed to a 90 degree one.

Eek Why didn't I buy a Zumo???

Ok,
Here is my update,

I just received and mounted the Burns Moto charger and HDB bracket.
I don't have pics in this computer, but I will posted soon.
Everything was fine until I connected an ordinary USB data cable between the charger and the GPS, it was when I found I still have issues with GPS power...
The GPS went to mass storage mode everytime I connected the cable.
I started to do some Google research to find the answer, once again, in Advrider...
Now, my problem is that USB data cable and Garmin USB POWER cable are different!...
I found that a vendor here sells the correct cable to feed a Garmin Nuvi, here is the thread: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=666156
I already sent him a PM and I still waiting for an answer...

I'll keep you posted...

Sweet dealio!

This is my current method until I find something more suitable. When it is plugged into the GPS it is sealed up nicely but once removed it is likely to get screwed up.

I saw a post somewhere that a condom, new not used, was put over the ends for when the rains.
I'm going to try that some day when the opportunity presents itself and I happen to have one on me.

Remember I'm not a teenager any more.

Now that's thinking outside the box...
This is my obsolete, for now, setup:

Yep...
I have an Aquabox for it or an Oregon GPS if the weather goes really bad...

I feel your pain, the markup on the "waterproof" GPSs is insane! I was reluctant for so long and relied on either a pocket atlas or my cellphone GPS to get me around. This is fine and dandy (because we used to have to do this) but it takes so much time to draft a route then put it in a map case etc... I really like my setup now. Have it in the touratech lockable mount so I don't have to worry about theft as much, it was just so much money so it took a while.

Maybe the price of waterproof GPS' are insane, that's right...
But the lesson I learnt is the bucks you spend in a waterproof GPS is worth the headaches you will suffer by converting your ordinary GPS into a wp one...

I have a cigar plug and usb port from eastern beaver that comes with a rubber plug for both sides. I have been using it for over 3 years on my wee and never had a problem with any water getting in either side. I plug my zumo 550 gps bmw style plug with an adapter in the cigar plug and use the usb for my phone or ipod touch, works great. I'm sorry for no pics as I can't figure how to post pics on this site.

Bill, setup an account on photobucket and upload then copy/paste the html link directly into the text if you want to post. Can you provide a link to the manufacture or a website that sells the item?

i use a garmin oregon, and the burns moto rectangular USB plug. I do not have that fancy little sleeve thingy to cover the plug end and make it waterproof. I did mount it under my gauges and behind the windshield, and thus far it and my unprotected end fitting to the garmin have been working without problems, even through some heavy down pours.

I actually just mounted a second one, to power both my droid and the garmin at the same time. seeing as the garmin doesn't stream music, and the droid tends to lose coverage when up in VT... I did have to replace the cable for the droid, I think the vibration got to the end into the phone, and it wouldn't keep good contact.
