If you feel you must ride the Dragon, I suggest you do it in the middle of the week, and still be aware that the local LEO's make a big part of their budget, looking for you and even the smallest indescretion.

If you do have an incident , be assured it will be costly for the helicopter ride as the region is remote and services are far away.

I personally avoid the place as there are so many better roads to ride and so much less chance of meeting up with some moron in my lane at an insane angle or speed they have no business attempting.

I was there on Wednesday and it was still fairly crowded. I was surprised there were no LEO's present.

The NC LEOs were over on the Cherohala Skyway running radar and writing speeding tickets like crazy.
I was at Thunder Mountain and the guys were stopping and crying the blues. Some got mandatory appearances because of excessive speed. 85 in a 45.

And I enjoy the Dragon as often as I can. Far more fun than you'd expect from such an overblown reputation.
Now I shall have to seek out the Snake next summer, when I ride for the mountains and relief from Flatistan..

I was there the last Monday in March, lovely time as far as crowds go. There were just over a dozen bikes in the parking lot at Deals Gap but the photographers were still out. I will admit to being impressed by the couple riding 2 up on a Ducati in full race leathers with sliders. Even more so when they pulled off their helmets after one of their runs and saw that both were somewhere in the mid-late 50s. Far more aggressive than I'd ever consider on a bike (back in my 20s in my sports car, yeah I might have been that aggressive but I like to think I've gotten past that now.)

Anyway, lovely tree color in those shots. I don't know if I'm going to have the change to do any fall color photography this year or not since my trip to Oklahoma where I was going to tack on a couple days on the Talamina and up the Ozarks got moved to mid November. I suspect all the color will be gone before I get to go.
