...from Austria to Montenegro and back....

This is my ridereport from my tour I did from 23.Sep. 2012 to 5.Oct. 2012

Day 1

Do you know the feeling when you get on your bike on a brisk september morning, the weather is wonderful ....

....you open the visor and feel the cold air around your nose and you cuddle in to your gear and everything is perfect and your ready to head off to discover a new continent....

...thats about the way I felt on the start of ride....

...on my way to Kitzbühel

3 views from the Pass Thurn, crossing from Tirol to Salzburg

...going up the Felbertauern Pass - lost the blue sky after the pass...

...going from here...

...to there...

...having a snack on the road (welcome to my kitchen) ....

...passing Triest...

...rushing through Slovenia...

...to arrive at the croatian coast...

...but too late for a decent sunset...

The route from day 1

stay tuned for day 2....

...my high density - high energy pack

...ready to roll...

...going down the coast...

...weather dosent look so good looking north...

...the south looks more promising...

...going down the Velebit coastal road...

..taking the ferry to get to the island Pag...

Before going on the ferry I had to take a 30km detour to get pertol since I didnt know when I would come across a station on the Island, but it was worth it...

...they say some of the oldest olive trees in the mediterranean are on this island...

...lonesome roads...

...rather dry but lovely scenery...

...having a break in the shadow of the wall...

...the city of Pag...

...wonderful roads...

...and now some sunset shooting... :)))

...still warm enough for swimming...

...some experimenting with long time exposure...

The route of day 2

That is the cleanest looking ADV bike I have seen on an RR. I like the pictures of the islands. I've driven by and always wanted to see them up close.

Day 3

Day 3

On the campsite in Zadar there was a old Transalp 600 with a german registration. The guy came over and started to talk to me and we soon discovered that we had the same attitude about touring with the bike. He had arrived a day earlier than me and said I should check out the hinterland on Zadar, it would be worth a ride and very little traffic.
I took his advice and went there after I had a quick sightseeing of Zadar. I wanted to sit down in one of the nice Cafes in the narrow alleys of Zadar and by coincidence met Siggi (as he is called) again, sitting at the Cafe I had choosen. Obviously we also had the same taste of palces and I was soon to discover the meaning of the word "soulmate."

...riding into Zadar

...walking around the harbour of Zadar...

..I had forgotten the keys to my yacht, so I had to stick to the bike....

..."Zadar-City"...

...checking out the hinterland of Zadar...

Now, some cineastic fans, especially the western fans may recognize this gorge.
It was used as bakground for the Old Surehand and Winnetou films.
to be precise it was used in the film "Flaming Frontier"
or for the german speaking click

They have a sign at the spot and you can read all about the making of the film and .....

...what made this spot so special was...... there is no sign to it, nor a proper road leading to it. I only knew it was there because, Siggi was there the day before.
And he only knew about it because a local guy told him to leave the main road after a few meters and follow his intuition and he will find a nice spot...
After leaving the main road you find a gravel road that seems to start out of nowhere and leads you to the top of the canyon.

...I had to go through that one, just couldnt avoid it..... (so much for the cleanest ADV bike)

...the route of the day...

stay tuned for day 4...

...keep going....

Day 4

During a meal I had with Siggi on the evening of day 3, he asked me if I would mind him joining me, since he didn't have a real plan and the route I had in mind appealed to him.
I didn't mind at all and was happy to have someone to share the trip.

We decided to go south to Dubrovnik, half way on the highway and the rest on the coastal road.

Since I had a good sleep and didn't get out of bed as early as him, Siggi went off a hour before me.
We agreed to meet somewhere on the way or latest at the campsite, that was recommended to us by some German hikers.
This loose connection we had was great. Each of us could go as fast as one wanted or stop to make picture without the other one needing to stop or wait.

Normally I don't like going on highways, I get the feeling of missing something, but this time it was great.
The best highway Iīve ever been on.
Rather new, next to no traffic, perfect tarmac, no potholes, coffee stops every 20-50km and most important - no boring sound barriers left or right but pure nature and great scenery.

Feeling great on the road I got carried away and didnt pay attention to my GPS, so I went down the highway - until it finished.....

I should have taken the exit about 50km earlier... so what - make the best of it...

....so I did...

...the sea meets the river of the Krka National Park...

...looking through the bridge towards the town of Skradin...

...the little lake Birina in Ploce...

...180° stitched panorama shot of the extreme fruitful Neretva Delta... absolutely amazing scenery...

...just beautiful..........the bike

On your way to Dubrovnik you have to transit through 15km of Bosnia & Herzegovina. The only strip of coast they have.

The only town there is Neum and looks like a ski resort in the alps. Not the nicest town I've seen.

...Dalmatian coast looking south - the "island" on the right is the peninsula of Pelisac...

...looking north - lots of little islands....

....Dubrovnik greets me with wonderful weather....

I thought I might send Siggi a message and ask if he'd already pitched his tent. I found out that he was about an hour behind me - of course I was the one off course....

...having a coffee at the harbour in Dubrovnik....

...leaving Dubrovnik behind to get to the campsite to meet Siggi - will be back the next day to do a little sight-seeing...

... the whole campsite to myself - almost...

...the route of the day....

....stay tuned for day 5...

Pics are gorgeous and are all there.. sometimes when you're using a network computer, the network blocks pictures linked to "unapproved" sites. But rest assured, we are enjoying your ride and sunny pics

...sightseeing in Dubrovnik - a wonderful town..

Day 5....

Today we wanted to have a look at the old town of Dubrovnik.
As nice town with a fantastic fortification around the old town.

...but first we had to get some breakfast...

....the morning few from our campsite...

...the path down to the village of Mlini to get some breakfast...

...this plane tree was planted 1742 and was enormous....

... on our way to the cable car station above Dubrovnik...

...fantastic view from up here...

...Siggi enjoying the view...

...the old harbour of Dubrovnik...

...now lets conquer Dubrovnik...

...obviously we weren't the only ones who had that idea...

...wonder what he did wrong to be held captive like that...

...entrance to the "Museum of Croatian War of Independence"...

... you can walk around the city on the wall and its definitely worth it...

...if you dont have the space - you have to be a bit creative with the layout...

We met this guy on the campsite. He came down from Austria on a Suzuki Burgman 400 with his wife. He had fixed a set of panniers and a topcase to the bike. The storage capacity he had, together with the room under his seat was enormous.

...relaxing in the evening sun before heading of to dinner...

... not a lot of riding but very relaxing...

stay tuned for day 6....

Dubrovnik looks lovely.

Thanks for this. Beautiful photos.

It looks nice and warm too. Yet another country to add on my ever increasing list of places to ride to. Keep it coming.
