It certainly looks pretty bad, but I really never noticed. I noticed the hacking, kicking, and bucking of the Multi below 3.5k rpm (Disclaimer: the one I tested was super bad, there seems to have been improvements and the 2013 adds a lot of improvements for this, too) much more and it annoyed me much more than the weird torque curve of the boxer.

I had a 2010 R1200GS and this curve was barely noticeable when riding. There was a bit of a dip around 5k rpm, but it wasn't bad or so. And in normal riding, the behavior below 5k was much more important for me. I'm not certain how much you'll actually feel the dips on the new one. Time will tell.

As an owner of both bikes I completely agree with your comments.

I test rode the Triumph Tiger Explorer yesterday because, on paper, it has everything new new GS will have and I wanted to give it a fair shot--find out for myself if it was a good replacement.

Here is my quick review:

The Tiger Explorer a sheep in wolf's clothes. It's a well-sorted bike with tons of standard options and it looks great; however, the low torque, driving mannerisms, and "refinement" make this a fantastic city/touring bike, not an adventure bike.

The Tiger is the kind of bike you take home to Mom and Dad. The GS is the bike you take behind the middle school and get pregnant.

I think the updated RT usually comes a year after the GS. The RT was just recently updated, so I don't think there will be a new one announced this year.

If my memory serves me correctly both the GS and RT got the camhead engine in 2010. They were not a year apart. Seems to me a good chance that if BMW were to do that again they would release at the different shows to maximise publicity.

The next RT is supposed to be completely redesigned and given they just changed it in 2010 as you noted and the fact that a wethead GSA is a year away, I sincerely doubt you'll see a redesigned RT wethead next year. The 2010 camhead was a midcycle refresh, so perhaps that's why the GSA and RT got the engine all at the same time, but history has shown on new bike models it starts with GS and then goes to the other R bikes at least a year afterwards.
