Okay, so in the end it was't five or ten seconds... more like a minute and twelve... but think about it... tomorrow Marc gets to shadow the new kid on the block and see if he sweats.

Then there is the MEDIA aspect of things; the poor old KTM press corp have "been there done that" as far as stage wins, leader of the rally yaddayaddayadda... goes. You can only put a spin on things and hype the press releases so much...

But they know that the HRC spindoctors will be up and running with this all over the f5-ing www.web as we speak!

So why not let them do the job for us...

Tomorrow is another day and there is a week of "another days" left to come before the fat lady gets drenched in Moet & Chandon...

so let Helder and the boys at HRC have a much deserved moment of glory in the limelight!

Exactly. KTM Media Kommandatur: "Let zem hype up their effort to make our victory even more convincing..." they may have a point.

I wonder now that we have a 3rd alien in the mix how the accordion effect will play out day-by-day

Tomorrow is going to be interesting.

DSS will be close to today's ASS, then they go south along (maybe inside) the Rerhis Oued, then the sandy Remlia track to Taouz. From Taouz they will converge to today's exit of the erg and ride in the opposite sense to the sand dunes. At the Erg Chebbi itself they will cross it South to North and exiting the Erg the track looks the same they did today, in the opposite sense. So, part of the track is common to today's...

This is Helder Rorigues's backyard. He knows the area well, but this is true about the other two aliens also. Let's see Helder handles the pressure tomorrow!

In that scenario (all things being equal) the third bongo player in the congo line is going to get the most benefit of the accordion effect of each day... especially in the situation they will move from defined tracks into "off piste" navigation stages in the dunes...

Mike Comba and Mudboy have the best seat at the chess table heading into the "Erg Chebbi" scrabble SS tomorrow... And HRC Helder has the world with its eyes on him...

I been looking at my maps of the area... and your assesment I agree with... except the last bit.

Stage 2 TUESDAY 16th OCTOBER 2012 : THE UNSEEN ERG CHEBBI
LIAISON : 27 KMS – SELECTIVE SECTOR : 315 KMS – LIAISON : 17 KMS

A beautiful day of driving and navigation… Wonderfull landscapes, up to the Ckeck Point 2. Navigators are the main actors in this stage. Totally new way for crossing the ERG!


It makes me wonder if the organiser has laid CAP waypoints through the center of the ERG...? In which case it won't be a matter of skipping across the low dunes between the crowns - like they did today on SS1, but tackling some of the bigger of the dune fields (there are a dozen or so quite large ones in the Erg Chebbi), perhaps even scaling some of these impressive saddles as part of the stage (CP at the top of a dune passage)...? (a' la' Tuareg and Merzouga Rallies...??? )

In which case tactics and riding skill/big dune technique will be very important.

Helder caught up to Despres by CP2 did that prevent him to do like the rest of the bunch to lose a bunch of time to Coma. Probably not but I think it definitely helped. Now the interesting part is that if as it was posted earlier the end was flat out opened, he was able to pass Despres and open a small gap on him, I know only 20 sec but still... Should we assume that Honda is a faster bike than the KTM?

I meant that they will enter the Erg West to East (opposite what they did today but at the same latitude - Merzouga) and then they will have to cross it South to North (and I agree that it probably will be over the big dunes in the middle by way of some WPM). Once outside the Erg (at its Northern tip) the track back to Erfoud looks the same they did today (again in the opposite way).

I would assume that CdP knows that a blown engine twenty clicks from the end of the first 270 km stage of what is a week long rally leaves you S.O.L.

While the lure of giving your newly acquired factory team ride it's very first maiden voyage rally stage victory is a fairly good incentive to twist the grip for HRCHelder...

Yes, that is true... the majority of the tracks used for tomorrows stage are reverse of those ridden today... although a slightly shorter total course.

For me it will be interesting to see what they have planned for them in the (little) desert sandpit.
