I had to drop my truck off once for undercoating, I unloaded the 640 to ride to work, set it on the center stand to let it warm up and got my riding gear on. I turned to get on it and to my shock, it was gone! I kept turning and saw it had vibrated down the parking lot and the rear tire was hanging into the street. My friend, the previous owner, rode it 4000 miles to Alaska and back for the Alcan 5000. Said he'd do 500 miles or more a day and lay in the motel at night still vibrating! Personally the vibes don't bother me, I can ride the beast all day long.

Big for me. I'm 5'8" and not a big guy. On the center stand, the seat on these bikes almost comes up to my elbow. I'm coming off an XR-75, loads of real metal 60's - 80's Vespas, and a YZ 450.

![]() I tried an inexpensive thumb lock style (forget the brand) first. The vibes in the bars were too much for it, never held more than a few seconds. The kako works! |

Hi everyone, I'm a new KTM owner after years of drooling and dreaming. Back in '03, I checked the 640 out at the dealership and fell in love. After almost 10 years, I just picked up my 2003 640 Adventure. Drove 1800km's and 20 hours to get it, and it was worth it. I took it for a burn today and it's better than I imagined. She's bone stock but that just means I have a clean slate....time to accessorize!

Bill, were the weights on when you bought it? Mine were but kept snagging trees in the woods so they are dampening the shelf now

You know I also have a Buell X1. The KTM skips along the driveway at idle. The Buell moves the driveway.

I wish I could get the grunt of the Buell I rode in the motor of my 950. That thing made all it's power between 400 and 4000 rpm it seemed. I guess if it revved higher, it'd vibrate itself to death? Sometimes it feels like my 640 has more low end than my 950

Yeah the Buell is very quirky. Vibrates like a bastard until 2500 rpm then you are on a cloud (comparatively speaking of course). But for all that torque is does have quite a narrow power band. The old tube frame models (x1s) are the bargain of the decade right now. Never got to ride a 950/990. Was offered at an ADV event, but I was on my KLR at the time, and just knew I would be crying in my helmet all the way home if I did.
