I often get approached by people, and yeah, normally they open with kinda' dumb or redundant questions. BUT, I have heard some really cool motorcycling stories from old timers, learned about new places to ride (on and off road), been invited to go riding (going on a group ride in two weeks), rode a couple or really nice looking gals around the block on separate occasions (one of which calls me occasionally for another ride), found a couple of really good deals on "barn bikes", gotten job offers, etc...
Sometimes the people I meet aren't worth fooling with, but for the most part I get a big kick out of the gas station conversations. I like reading their faces too, the young guy drooling over my dirty bike or the old man who, in his mind, gets sent back many years to his days riding his BSA through the fields (and all the hell raising of his youth!). It's all cool, I'll talk to everyone of 'em.
I enjoy talking with the folks. Some are winsome, some want to know why not a Harley, want to know if I am a 'mercan or not. When I tell them I served 25 years they usually stand down. Folks are cool and most of them want to be doing what I am doing. The biggest thing I get is " You rode 8500 miles all by yourself?" or, 100, or 1000 etc. Love em all, God bless them all.

I just tell them: I didn't know BMW made cars until I passed one

My girlfriend has had some funny conversations. She rides with me and is learning to ride her own bike, she also knows a lot about motorcycles.
She had a friend (who used to ride when she was our age) ask her what type of bike she was getting, a harley or a sportbike. When my girl told her neither her friend was bewildered and asked what else is there

My Pastor, and 2 out of 3 Junior Pastors at my church ride dual sports. (Junior Pastor #3 builds hot rod motors.) Assuming that guy thought bad people ride motorcyles, wouldn't that be more motivation to interact with them? Yup, that's a strange comment indeed.

Stopped for gas on the new V7 yesterday. I hear a small voice behind me - "cool bike!" I turn around to see a small boy, prob about 5 or 6 years old, walking out of the convenience store with (I assume) his mom. Gave him a grin and a thumbs up. She grabbed him by the shoulder and hustled him to the car. Wouldn't even risk another glance at me. Don't know if it was the motorcycle, the goatee, or the post-rugby-match black eye, but I am apparently a dangerous and malevolent force to be avoided. Who knew?

I'm actually a church-going family man with two lil ones of my own. Of course, here in California, sometimes you get avoided just for that.

Cheers,

Cade

Not really a question, but stupid nevertheless.

NYC 1992 ... standing at stoplight waiting for the light to change - I had a FRXs Lowrider at the time. Guy stops next to me, powers down window and yells "next time buy a harley -insert expletive-"

DUH? ...

Guess the full face helmet and the absence of pirate gear gave him the wrong idea?

I kinda wanna start answering that one with "Mach 1" or "eh... About the speed of sound" and go on to explain it without numbers.

Remember. No stupid questions... Just stupid people that ask them. That way they'll get a rash of poking fun when they finally tell their friends that know better. :p

The correct answer could have been. "Shit, I never even thought about that! Now what am I going to do??"

Guy walking through parking lot, passes by several people on his way to me to ask if I have a lighter.
You think all motorcyclers smoke or something?

Yes, I do smoke, but that's not the point.
