Thnx Nedman

That's a great suggestion! Could always loop back thru Glacier and then Waterton!

This is the local playground for people out of Calgary...lots of forest roads and nice backcountry. The Forest Trunk Road as its called.

It was pretty dusty on a Sunday with all the RV traffic coming out of the boonies

after we went in a ways, the traffic thinned out. The scenery got better too.

The photos are from north of Cochrane to the hwy 11 , a very nice gravel road.

Probably not exactly what you were looking for but this is during a break on "cell phone hill" while mapping out a few trails for sledding; this is close to where RR190 connects to the FTR, the FTR is the dust trail just below the hill on the horizon. I have a old Motorola Tundra ruggedised flip phone for that I generally use instead of my usual Android due to it's much better reception etc.

Lots of spots like this that are 5 minutes or less off of the road for camping spots that I would suspect that a KLR hack could make it in.

Thnx

Yeah, nice to be able to get to high ground within cell phone range to call in. Don't get me going about cell phone coverage... I'm with Rogers, and their coverage away from TC-1 is pathetic. Consistently my buddy Reg gets coverage in some pretty remote areas, and I get NO SIGNAL! Still looking for the Rockies Backroad Mapbook - even MEC here in Wpg didn't have it!

This is a nice spot we have camped at a few times, ~20km South of the the Red Deer River bridge and ~10km off of the FTR (Point B on the link).

Keeping an eye on this thread...

I turn 40 next year and the wife has authorized (maybe I just dreamed that part) a fly+ride or a week-long ride, depending on how the bank accounts look. So, either South to ride a bike home, or taking the KLR to the Mountains or a loop of Superior.

I checked out Google Earth and it clearly shows a road that goes from Cadomin to Mountain Park and then winding back east to the FTR. Yesterday I bought a big thick "Canada Back Road Atlas" on sale, but I don't see it in this map book!

I just went on-line here: http://www.backroadmapbooks.com/shop...roducts_id=198 and bought this .pdf

Much more detail in the "Canadian Rockies" edition. That road thru the Mountain Park mine site and Cardinal Reserve area is clearly shown. I've seen it mentioned that recent mining in the Cadomin/Mountain Park mine site renders that route impassable back to the FTR. Anyone know... is this still the case? Can anyone comment on using this route?

It shows up well on Google Earth and as of last fall was still open. See the Mobius ride report. You can also download the gpx tracks on this site in "layin down tracks" section.

On Dualsportmaps.com you can also see my trunck road map including pictures from my and the mobius trips on it. It looks very easy, and as good as any gravel in the area.

I plan on running that connector as soon as the roads are clear up there and will post up when I do.

I rode it a couple of times last summer as it is close to my "neck of the woods" as it were - this should be as up to date as you are going to get; phone numbers to call as well:

The Mobius trip was not mine, but rather a guy from New York. I did post a report in day trippin' a long while ago from a trip to Mountain Park and Cadomin. We didn't do the southern connector that trip as we were low on daylight and fuel.

This should give you a good idea.

I did the aforementioned "Skyline" road east of hwy 22 on this one. Really nice with a few good switchbacks and muddy sections. This one your rig could handle no problem. I would strongly recommend staying off Dutch Creek road with your side car rig though. Dutch Creek Campground is not bad though.

As far as campgrounds go there are lots all along the trunk road from highway 3 up. They are shown in the backroad map books. I have checked out every one and they are all nice so you can't go wrong. I stayed at Ram falls campground in a tent. It was very busy, but did not feel crowded. I didn't worry about bears, even though I had a very close encounter that spring at McLean Creek campground in the middle of the night. I practice bear safe camping, and pack bear spray and an air horn, which stay in the tent, close at hand.

Here is a good site to check out Alberta campgrounds on: http://www.albertawow.com/

Places like Waterton you have to reserve ahead to get a spot. If you can't get in there, head for Payne Lake, about 20 minutes east and quite nice.

I hope this helps! If your trip swings past Calgary on a Friday, send me a note and maybe I'll tag along and act as tour guide.
