There's also a stop sign painted on the road before crossing the flight path that was ignored by the auto. Granted, a standard stop sign would be better, but the airport rep said that type wasn't allowed due to being an obstruction.

That makes sense, but given the displaced threshold, as a driver I would be inclined to look at the runway when I stopped to avoid prop blast of departing aircraft, rather then looking for a guy to take my roof off anyway...

As a half smart driver, knowing that I was about to cross a runway, I would stop and take a really deliberate look around, making triple sure there were no aircraft in any direction. If I had passengers I would get them to have a good look as well. Look up and live and all that.

Would have been a good idea to have his landing light on...

But if the driver never looked to the left, it would have made no difference.

Pilot was a student... wonder who taught him to be so low on short final?

X-48 Blended Wing Body research aircraft makes 100th test flight.

I really feel as though this is the shape of things to come in the (distant) future of commercial airliners.

totally fake photoshop of what one could look like.

I would say VERY distant future, if at all. It will be a very brave manufacturer and even braver commercial airline to take on something so radical. Knowing the way airlines and their investors like to save money, primarily by reducing wages, we're more likely to end up with pilotless aircraft first.

In the world of extreme rigourous Health and Saftey, it is interesting to see some strong resitance in deference to 3rd world needs and practicality.
