Basecamp buy map?

Just downloaded Basecamp and am in the process of getting ready for my head to explode. It tells me I have to buy a map to use the thing for trip planning. Really? I am really a NOOB at this stuff. Mabey I will just go back to my paper maps.

Basecamp only comes with a basic global map.

Until you decide which maps you need or want, you can download a map set from OSM. If you download the *.exe file you can install the map set to the computer. Then use MapInstall to transfer the map to the GPS.

If you download the zipped *img file you can install the maps directly onto the gps's SD card. When the gps is connected to your pc via the usb cable, BC upon start-up, will read and load the map. BC can read maps that are either installed on the gps and/or the computer.

Do you own a Garmin GPS? Basecamp is a tool to use in working with their GPS units. It provides access to the maps on the GPS, or those that you purchase. It is not really meant to be a standalone application like Google Maps, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I will get the map of the area I will be in from Garmin. Just starting to learn this stuff and it seems for every two steps I take forward I get pushed back one.

Like anything else computer and/or electronic gadget related, it's a complex system. You cannot expect to master it in a day or two. These things take time and patience.
