I'm happy he's a celebrity that's a rider, never mind a smart rider (That would imply smart celebrity, and those are damn scarce, although Leno probably qualifies).

I'm willing to give Jay Leno a huge amount of slack on this one. He is a friend of all motorcyclists.

Leno is truly a good guy, which seems to be a rarity among celebrities. Years ago, just before he took over the Tonight show, he was in town doing a show. He sent tickets to the local Vincent club, and after the show he came to my friend's place to relax, eat and talk motorcycles. We spent several hours hanging out, and he was just one of the guys, unpretentious and down to earth.

What his garage show, that initially was just his money being used to show and teach about the cars and motorcycles in his and others' collections, does for young guys and for older enthusiasts is very respectable. I know he got flak for what happened to Conan, but I always thought the better man of the two won out. Maybe not always the better comedian, but then that's not what we are talking about here, nor what I would support for the position. |

Leno is a better comedian than most think. His best thing is a monologue using nothing on the stage but a stool, and he has no problem keeping a crowd laughing for an hour and a half. The Tonight show is not a venue where he's at his best.

You're absolutely correct. My wife and I had the opportunity to sit in the front row of company meeting with Leno doing an hour-long monologue. Not only was he very funny, the monologue was completely clean, not a single risque or inappropriate joke at all. And a good part of the monologue was car-oriented although not at all related to the company's business. It was great.

Ive had the chance to chat with Jay on several occasions out in the hills of LA and at the track at Laguna Seca. He is a genuinely nice and very approachable guy and a veritable encyclopedia of information about cars and motorcycles..... and very funny.
