I have replaced the whole ignition/generating system on my XL, with the exception of the pickup in the RHS casing. Must have flung the old coil in the shed purge between bikes... ![]() Nothing wrong with cloth covered wires, so long as you haven't got a short going to earth where there shouldn't be, it's all good. I think that Ricky is still using cloth covered wires on their new stators...... .

Needle Jet Holder Sought
Don't suppose anyone has got a dead left-side carb lying about, that might contain a needle jet holder (number 29 in this diagram) http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-xl600r-19...2.html#results and that they may be willing to part with?
The one in my carb is scored and slightly deformed - presumably by a POs attempts to remove it or a reluctant jet. Thanks

I am in the UK and have a spare pair of carbs, what are the specs for yours so we can make sure they are the same.

Well I got home last night after a 1800km (1200 mile) round trip to sell one bike and buy the XL600RMG. Got a chance to do about 40kms of dirt riding yesterday and it goes well. Only worry is a knocking noise coming from the top end, particularly at idle. Seems to go away as revs increase,(or maybe you just can't hear it.) Pulled the valve cover off this morning, then the head and then the barrel. Small end bearing is quite loose. Some movement when rocking the pin from side to side. Looks like a rod kit is in order. Was planning to rebuild top end eventually with a 11.5:1 piston, Kibblewhite valves and springs, and a stainless exhaust and maybe flatslide carbs. Looks like I'll be doing it sooner rather than later!

Hey All,
I have a problem with my XR. I am attempting to line up everything on TDC so that I can replace the timing chain, and the markings on the flywheel are nowhere near the inspection hole when on TDC. With the flywheel marks lined up in the inspection hole, the piston appears to be on BDC prior to the compression stroke. Needless to say, the markings on the cam sprocket are way out. The engine was running before I removed it from the frame.. The marks are on the flywheel are: | | |F |T got me stumped....any ideas??? ![]()

My RMG has become extremely difficult to start, even with the electric foot. Good fuel; good compression; recently overhauled carb (and prior to this problem it has run well since carb overhaul); fuel flowing to carbs; valve clearances OK; spark although not massive is fairly strong.
'Stator?' I wondered. But the thing is, when it does start, it runs smoothly and well, ticks over sweetly, and pulls strongly. Would this be the case if the stator was dead/dying? Anything glaringly obvious I may have overlooked? Bit flummoxed chaps.

Should generate 0.7-1.0 volt when triggered. Measure resistances in the coil and spark plug cap... Try a different CDI box...it could be the problem Or failing everything else, send it to me ![]() .
